Alpine MRP-M500 and 10" Type R - Ohm question

Hey, today I learned a great lesson. Had some crap in my car today and had a long 40 minute drive to another city. Got to my destination and the sub was sounding funny. Stuff shifted around during the drive and pushed in on the subwoofer and the thing is totally crapped now There must be some kind of cage type cover you can mount in front of the subwoofer? If seen people use wire fence type stuff but that looks so ghetto.

I have an Alpine MRP-M500 and a single, blown to , Alpine SWR-1023D (at 4 ohms).

Now I am wondering if I should just replace it with another one or get the Alpine SWR-1043D so I can run it at 2 ohms. I was more then happy with the power I was getting at 4 ohms and am a little worried about my car's electrical if I go with 2 ohms and have the amp running at 500W. I have a 2010 Chevy Cobalt and when bass heavy songs are playing my lights will slightly dim when the car is stopped at stoplights. If there is slight dimming at 4 ohms (300W) would it get worse at 2ohms (500W). I really don't want to mess with the car's electrical since it is new and everything is under warranty... for now anyways lol. Everywhere I read on the net says to go 2ohms with this amp though so not sure what to do.

Are there any other subwoofers I should consider for my Apline amp? I really did like the 10" Type R. It put most 12" subs and even some 2x12" setups to shame

When you are happy that is a great thing! Look at the posts on here and they are posts about dissatisfaction with their system... buy a nice JL type cover with a new type R and your done and happy again.

If you go larger (or lower impedance) you will spend more $, you will probably over tax your electrical system (add a battery $$) and you would still run the risk of not being as happy as you were before your trip

Thanks for the replies.

Both 4ohm and 2ohm Type R subs cost the same ($200 Crutchfield) so cost isn't an issue unless the 2ohm load is too harsh on my car's electrical and I have to get a new (or 2nd) battery.

Yeah I was more then happy with my Type R at 4ohms but I may be even happier with a Type R at 2ohms. Is it worth the risk though? Will probably just go with what I had originally. Thanks

Yiur not risking anything. Your car's electrical system will be fine. I have ran up tp 1000 watts rms amp onto my sub and when I cranked it my lights did dim but that twice the power you are asking to put into your car. Defenitely go with the dual 4 ohm type r and wire to 2 ohms. If its too loud for you you can always turn down the bass and your electrical system will be fine.

Well like I said my lights were already dimming slightly before when I would stop at stop lights.

True but your sub will be louder because of being 2 ohms but you can turn it down and you will have the ability to turn it louder if you want. I am just saying that it wont hurt to be able to have the ability to turn it up.

Get a dual 4 ohm coiled type R and wire the coils in parallel. That ill give you your 2 ohms and 500watts.
...and get a grill, haha

So your saying if I go with 2ohms (500W) and turn it down it won't use much more power then if I had 4ohms (300W) and it cranked up louder? My main concern is my cars electrical. If I knew it could handle it I would go with the 500W setup without a question.

step down to the 2ohm load for the amp, it will be better for you and your sub in the long run. Just tune it properly and you wont have any issues.
Alpine makes grills specifically made for the Type R subwoofers.
