alpine type r questions

Hey guy, currently running a single alpine 12" type R in my 2009 aveo5 hatch. been thinking on adding a 2nd.

Its a dvc 2ohm , currently wired to 1ohm and running off a hifonics brutus 1200d amp , im prob pushing about 500-600 rms to the sub. about 6/10s gain

I guess my question is think it will make much of a difference adding another 12"?

where they are 2ohm dvcs what would be my wiring options.. especially to the amp.

DeadlySones 04-02-2010 11:24 AM

Buy second sub and wire series/parallel. That will give you a 2 ohm load to the amp.

danyman 04-02-2010 11:32 AM

i wondered would it work properly to have 1 2ohm dvc and 1 4ohm dvc. wire it up to give a 1.5ohm load?

I think one sub "sees" more power than the other... not positive though. Might have cancellation issues due to subs having different impedance's. :dunno:

flavp5 04-02-2010 01:31 PM

Well if I pick up a 2nd sub ill just get another dvc 2ohm.
What are my wiring options with 2 dvc2's?

DeadlySones 04-02-2010 03:00 PM

The only good one is series/parallel or parallel/series both will give you a 2 ohm load. Possibilities are 8, 2, or .5 ohms.

this is what i was wondering lol. one has a lower impendence than the other..

grab a second amp and another dvc2ohm lol

flavp5 04-02-2010 07:43 PM

well id still be sending close to 900rms to both if wired to 2ohms

or ive been thinking of upgrading to a xxx re 12" single.

think id be better off with 1 re xxx 12, or 2 alpine type rs

jalat 04-02-2010 08:10 PM

you'll be better off with another type r

flavp5 04-02-2010 08:22 PM

thats what i was wondering as well..

i had 2 1st gen type R 10 inchers before in a mazda protege5 but they were always underpowered getting like 300 watts rms total

this single 12 kicks hard and sounds good in the small hatch i have now... and power is never a issue

its currently in a 2 cubic foot box, L shape Port tuned to 35hz

jalat 04-02-2010 08:30 PM

Make sure you have goo electrical, and you'll get good power out of your amp.

In my experience with Type ARGGGG'S, I've noticed that they like a larger enclosure. SO if possible, I would suggest around 4.5 cubic feet after displacements around 35hz

1 Attachment(s)
heres whats im running right now

its taking up 75% or more of my hatch space
so a dual setup will be all of it for sure

looks tight LOL

common chamber enclosure will work best, port on drivers side.

flavp5 04-02-2010 08:48 PM

thanks, heres a video from last year, since then i added a pioneer deck..
in the process now of doing 3 things..
switch to alpine deck, always had em and like em better then pioneer..
get a amp to my boston acoustics components
add a 2nd type R or get a higher end sub

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZ0fycmp0Gw

so if i add a 2nd type R , go single port or dual port?

jalat 04-02-2010 08:58 PM

single slot port on the drivers side.

if you need an enclosure design, let me know.

Lord Huggington 04-03-2010 11:27 AM

25% more space from 2 cubes isn't going to be 4.5 cubes, it's 2.5. If you want to fit 4.5 you'll need to be able to stack another and even larger box on your current, have you noticed you want to double up? It looks like you can go wider on the sides and height but not much. Either use a single beefy 12 on more power, 2 10's in 3 cubes, or two of these if you've got 600w to play with ($125ea). These look crazy for a small sub with great sensitivity and response.

Sound Solutions Audio - DCON Series Subwoofers

YouTube - 10" SSA DCON Subwoofer abusing a trunk lid - single ported 10 did 137db in a trunk with 500w (300 rms).

The loudest will probably be a BTL 12 or 2 BL 10's. Can you afford 1500-2000w? That kind of setup would be real fkin loud in a small hatch.

Lord Huggington 04-03-2010 11:44 AM

Port on drivers side with 54-72 square inches of port area for 4.5 cf3, invert the subs because it looks like you're cramming, use .75" MDF, and a 35hzish tune. What are the max dimensions you can use? I doubt you can fit 4.5.

Tell me that ain't sexy for 300W RMS.

Ill have to measure later today to see what room I have.
Don't want to go all out. But space is definatly limited. I'm getting a good puch from the one 12 now and without completly changing my setup. Maybe its no feasable to add another type r 12??

MTA 04-03-2010 01:43 PM

whatever you do dont mix sub models PERIOD... if you do it will make things worse not better with the potential of blowing things up...

MTA 04-03-2010 01:52 PM

oh and btw do not make it 4.5 cu ft... thats way too big! but hey what the hell do i know
that size of box is for a sub designed back in the 80's

Lord Huggington 04-03-2010 02:25 PM

2 type-r's would be all out crap in a tiny box.

Fi BL 12 $274-329 + shipping

Lord Huggington 04-03-2010 02:27 PM

What's wrong with 2.25 per type-r 12? Are you sure it was designed back in the 80s?

MTA 04-03-2010 02:59 PM

like i said..what do i know..but 4.5 for a pair of 12's for daily listening in a small car like that IS too big... try around 1.5-1.8 before displacement..you'll be surprised

flavp5 04-03-2010 03:00 PM

Ok guys. Obviously 4.5 cubes aint happening in the back of my car.

I'm pleased with my hifonics brutus 1210 for now.

Its either one of two things for me.

Option a. Add a extra dvc 2ohm alpine. At which point ill be sending approv 400 to 450 rms to each sub

Option b. Sell the alpine sub. And get a single 12 of higher quality. And push the 1000 or so watts to it at 1ohm

Remember besides box space I need room for 2 amps. The sub amp and front component amp.

MTA 04-03-2010 03:07 PM

ok here look...Im usually not a big fan of manufacturer specs...but this is worth a look.

http://support.alpine-usa.com/produc..._SWR-1242D.PDF

if its the other model the box wont change just the final impedance
I believe it says something like optimum enclosure 1.7 cu ft
but really I dont know shet about boxes

flavp5 04-03-2010 09:01 PM

heres the specs of the box that im currently running

running (2 jbl power series 12's in 8 cube box) is that too big?

Whats the box tuned to? 20-25hz?

Lord Huggington 04-04-2010 12:08 PM

You didn't account for subwoofer displacment, it gets 1.9. The difference between a Type-R on 500w and a BTL on 2k is huge, probably louder than 2 Type-R's on 1k. The Alpine will conk out at 1000W and a BTL can handle what, 3000?
