We plugged in 2 **edit** well known brand-name **edit** 12's, same box, did not touch the gains at all, and these were brand new, not broken in yet. Hit 129db's. This box looked quite small, probably .75 per sub.
when does the interesting part come?

Cujo, I guess my point is that this system was designed and installed by an authorized Alpine dealer, and this box was supposedly made for these Type R 12's, and it did not have very impressive output. When we put these other subs in the same box, which was actually too small for them, the output increased dramatically. Not trying to knock Alpine, I know that many people have had good luck with them, but I have yet to hear them sound good in a setup. Maybe I have never heard them in the right box....

Were the Kickers underpowered like the Alpines?

They were being run off of the MRD-500, I think it was set up for 4 ohm mono. We did not change any of the settings, strictly swapped subs for subs.

Do the Type R's generally need a lot of power to get moving?

cujo 01-18-2004 05:39 PM

swr1241d:
Power Handling Capacity (Peak) : 1000W
Power Handling Capacity (RMS) : 300W

MRDM500:
RMS Power (at 12V,20Hz-200Hz)

Per channel into 2 ohms : 400W x 1
Per channel into 4 ohms : 200W x 1

RMS Power (at 14.4V,20Hz-200Hz)

Per channel into 2 ohms : 500W x 1
Per channel into 4 ohms : 250W x 1

200w.
Not the ideal setup. 1 amp for each sub would be better. Not a fair judgement of their capabilities. And I'm guessing that if the same place sold the box as well, it was nowhere near the proper size.

For sure. I am pretty sure they were dual 4 ohm subs, each coil wired in series, then each sub paralelled to the other one, making for a 4 ohm load. Underpowered for sure.
