Id like to rewind my stock alt for a little more juice... Ive been quoted $250 to rewind from 105 to 140 installed and everything....

I'd rather buy the parts and do it myself.. anyone know where to get em ?

(car is 95grand am with 3100 GM engine. max current draw is around 280amps- stock alt seems to keep up good on the highway, but not in town)

I am sure that an electrical re-wind shop would sell you the wire, however, motor re-winds are a very specialized job.

Re-winding the motor is only the first step, you will then have to varnish, and bake it at very high temperatures. Many times, depending on the application, you have to varnish, and bake numerous times.

If you are not a motor re-winder...don't even think of doing this yourself.

Buying a heavy duty alternator and installing it yourself, would probably be your most economical option.

I'd just buy the finished product. It may cost a bit more but it will work and in the long run cost you less agravation.

Yea.. I think so... they also put in heavier duty regulators... ect..

I was under the impression that you could basically buy a 'kit' for this... all off the shelf parts...

Hey, the other thing I was wondering about putting on a smaller pully so it turns faster... anyone ever try this ?

if its al alt for daily driving just use the same pully. chances are that you will get some slipping with a smaller pulley. not always 100% garranteed but id keep the bigger pully. you could probably find a nice guy(who rebuilds alts) and he might be kind enough to sell you a stator and rectifier so that the parts you need are already to go. i doubt that you will find these parts with warranty. so what is your intention. more bang for the buck now, or longer bang for your buck? spend your dollar wisely. I got 2 freinds with this scenario.
1 friend bought his stuff so far away that it costs him loads of shipping to get his alt repaired. the other friend, just got parts and did his own alt, and now has no more alt cause he did a bad job soldering the rectifier(used the wrong solder and not enough) so now he is out 300 in parts. no more alt. good luck, hope that neither of these happen to you

heh... ya DIY projets can bite you in the *** sometimes...

Iam not in a buring furry to get this done since I don't even have my front stage started yet......

But I do have another alt I could rebuild without having to take my car off the road... I guess I'll have to talk to few more alt shop guys and see what I can do....
