What makes an alternator fit only specific vehicles...besides mounting holes etc.? Say I bought the alternator that Gmac is desperately trying to sell, and the mounting brackets et al don't work with my Stealth, then is it not feasible to just make your own bracket, or perhaps just transfer the guts to the Stealth's alternators' housing? THe only things that I can think of immediately:

1) Physical mounting holes. Custome brackets may be needed as you said.

2) Regulation. IF your car has an internally regulated alt you need to make sure your new one is internally regulated or get an external regulator for it. If your car has an external regulator and the new alt is internally regulated then some bypass work is needed.

3) Rotation. Really just a fan issue and mostly only applicable to Honda and their backwards motors.

4) Some cars have additional circuitry in the alternator itself. If your current alternator has just the charge wire out of it this is likely a non-issue.
