Which amp is better to use for these subs? Rockford Fosgate or Sony?
 

Hey everyone,

I have two amps, a Rockford Fosgate 800a2 stereo amp and a Sony XMD9001GTR mono block.

Now my situation is as follows:

I have 2 MTX MXS1204 12" subwoofers with 4 ohm DVC's so which means my impedence would be 1 ohm in parallel for both of them, or 4ohm's in series if i connect them to either amp.

now the Fosgate bridged gives me roughly 750 watts (last i checked) of power bridged @ 4 ohms (as thats wat its stable out), which sounds like the better bet as fosgate is better than sony (from what i know about 2 years ago) but the downside: its an A/B amp, so not entirely efficient, and its an old amp.

The Sony however is roughly 900watts (based off birthsheet) stable @ 2ohms but which I cannot connect @ 2 ohms and its a brand new amp. downside: i dont know how much power something with a 30a fuse can really dish out, especially 900watts.

That being said, help :( what are your suggestions?

My vote goes to the Rockford, it should do better than 750 bridged.

It probably could, but i never pushed it too high. Remember its an old amp, maybe 99 or 98? but then again, it was hand built from the fosgate factory (sticker still on the back :)) so i'm thinking essentially the same way too.

Rockford all the way, and the older stuff was really well built.

My vote goes to your RF amp.
The early 90s RF gear is 1000 times better than the late 90s RF gear IMO.

The Rockford amp is better suited for your speaker load, so it gets my vote. That 800a2 WILL get hot enough to fry eggs with, so make sure it isn't buried under a seat or anywhere where it can't cool properly.

Indeed that Rockford amp is going to get hot. The nice thing about it is that you can barbeque on it. Make sure you have a very good ground for it. Don't just attach it to metal scraped clean, measure the return resistance and get it as low as possible. Most of those old amps made over the 1000w into 4 ohm for output, it will do a great job with the subs wired in series / parallel.
