Amp and Box for Alpine Type X's
 

Hey guys car audio semi-n00b here looking for some help with the system for my 72" Impala Coupe.

I think I'm going to go with 4 12" Alpine Type X's which I can get for $350ea incl tax CAD.

First off do you like my choice? These will be mainly for Hip Hop but SQ is alos important to me. Do you think there are better choices in that price range?


I plan on using a sealed custom box that will house all 4 subs (with compartments) 50.75"x15"x11.25" using 3/4" MDF that will make 3.58'^3 total .895'^3/sub. Alpines website says .65-1.25/sub but I have read on other sites that .9/sub is ideal.

Do you liek the sealed box for these subs? Do you agree that .90 is ideal or do you think I should lo larger? I have space if nessisary to do alot deeper but not much to go higher or wider.

Finally what are some good amp for these subs? I expect I will have to upgrade my alt and if necessary will put in more batteries so that shouldnt be a problem.

How much is your budget for the whole system....install, wiring, amps etc?

Makes a BIG diff as to the answers you seek.

Well the thing is I don't really have a budget. Not because I can spend as much as I want, I can't, but simply becasue I have no clue how much I want to spend. So I decided that once I pick out subs I will jsut build my system around them making sure I 'do it right' if it turns out that will be more than I am comfortable spending I will choose cheaper subs. I figured I would spend about the same amount on amps as I would on subs so that leaves about $1400 CAD for amps.

Another $1000ish should get me materials to build the box myself, cabling, Sound Dapeming, Cap etc.

So I guess that leaves my 'budget' at about $4000.

If your going for a setup of that size, I would start by beefing up your electrical system by getting a couple extra batteries and a ho alternator, and upgrading the big 3. You also dont want to overlook your frontstage if your looking into any sq with the sub level you plan on setting up. 4000 will get you something very nice. You stuck on the 4 type x 12's, or are you willing to negotiate size/drivers? You could get 2 sick 12 or 15s, port them, and relax as it gives you a sweet sounding back massage. That would also leave more room for your front stage. Oh ya, and ditch the cap, useless imo.

^^^^ I'd agree about looking at less subs, but better quality, and porting.
Going loud sealed can use a LOT of power, and get very expensive. There's a limit to the wattage you can pull from a stock electrical system, so efficiency is key to a system in this price range.

Any SQ systems I do at this level use a single sub...maybe two if space allows.

It also makes more sense to start your plan at the other end....design the system based on the outcome you seek, rather than choosing the parts first and ending up with whatever it turns out to be.
If you start with the install first, you'll be able to choose the parts that best fit the system and budget as you go along. If you start with the parts, you'll be forced into sacrificing the install to fit the budget, and that seldom works well.

Decide ahead the SPL you would like to achieve, low frequency extension, and clarity of bass (Loud, Low, Clear), and then go from there.

Nothing really wrong with your choice of subs, but there are lots of systems that will out-pound those 4 for the overall price.

However they play low(hip hop) very well and with enough power you wont regret going with the Type-x!

I dont know that they are that power hungry...I had a 10 and was running it off a Zapco AG350...Yes it could use more power but for everyday use it was fun to listen to!

The type x's are inefficient and require quite a bit of power ... I would suggest upwards of 600Wrms x 4 subs = 2400Wrms .... you MUST upgrade your power supply for this. I would suggest less subs or a more efficient sub if you do not feel like spending the $$$$ it will take to upgrade and power those 4 - type x's.
