So I went to a local shop to have my amp Installed and was not expecting the quote I got.. My current setup is a jvc deck with 1 set of preouts running to a concept 2 channel amp thats running bridged to my sub. What I wanted them to do was install my new 2 channel amp to run to my front speakers which are currently running off the head unit. Shop guy's quote looks like this:

$36 -12 ft. Power cable 4 awg (He says the current 8 awg running from the battery to the 1 amp wont be sufficient to handle the drain from 2 amps.)

$30 -6 Feet of rca to connect/split the amp (Since the head unit only has the 1 set of pre-outs)

$22 -20 Feet of speaker wire (Can't he just use the existing speaker wire running from the head unit???)

$85 -Amplifier mounting under seat (1.5 Hours Labour)

$220 -Rewire door speakers (4 Hours labour)

$24.95 -Distribution Block (Do I really need one?)

GRAND TOTAL

$417.00$

So Whats the deal... am I gettin hosed?

Just do it yourself... It will save you a LOT of money. Also, where you can, you could use welding wire and terminals etc.

There is NO NEED to rewire the door speakers. Tell him to run the outputs of the amp back up behind the deck and connect to the factory wiring there. There is only value in rewiring doors if you're going extreme with high end components and installation - which you're not.

3 bucks a foot for 4 awg is pretty rich too....same with the pricing on the speaker wire, unless its braided 12awg (who would use that for speakers anyway?)

The distro block is required to split the 4 awg to the two amps - this is correct. I find the quote to be VERY high in all respects.

WOW...boy am I glad i know how to do all this stuff. Do it yourself, but get a friend (that knows what he is doing) to help you. All wiring and most of the hardware can be bought in a amp kit for $30-80.00 at most shops or the flea market. Don't get all impressed with high end brand names, get the generic stuff, wire is wire at your level. Like someone said, run the speaker wires to the back of the deck, you will not notice a difference.
