Amps which are typically not power pigs
#1
I've pretty much given up on my Xtant 1001d. Even with a cap it seems to just not be getting enough power from my golf and it keeps shutting down. Furthermore, as I'm looking into the future, I'd like to throw my xbox and an LCD in, thus requiring more power.
So I'd like to look into a new amp to replace my beloved xtant, just testing the waters of course. I've been told that some amps are much less power hungry than others. Is this true? Could I still get 750-1000 watts at 2 ohms out of an amp for less juice than my xtant wants?
I'm told Orion is very efficient on the juice. Is this true?
Thanks for your time.

IMO your first upgrage should be of the charging kind and not a new amp. Instead of spending all sorts of money looking for an amp that may be "less power hungry" and sacrificing quality, why not spend a couple bucks and get your charging system up to par? Especially if you planning to add more objects like the Xbox and LCD screen. Even with a different amp pumping at 1000 watts and with all the add ons you have, your charging system is going to need a boost. So look into getting a beefed up altenator from places like Stinger and such, or get yours re-wound to as much as it will hold. After that take a look into a nice deep cycle battery like an Optima Yellow or somthing comparable. And last but not least, ditch the cap, its usless IMO. Once you have that done, you will notice a huge difference in your system.

Xtant 1001dx = 58% efficient @ full output (12.5 volts)
Since it's a regulated power supply, it would be even less efficient @ 14.4 volts ...

Any class D should do well.
You could also try updrading your power wire size and all your grounds to bigger.
What size wire do you have now?

I would upgrade the electrical instead of looking for a smaller amp. The 1001d will do about 1300-1400rms at 14.4v. It's efficient but it's gonna need some juice to work also.

Maybe you have to evaluate WHY you need that monster amp... Rebuild your box to 2cuft and port it and I bet you dollars to donuts that a 500watt amp will be louder... Half your current draw is now GONE.
My only experience with the 1001D is an aquaintance that had one. Thing never 'sounded' like it did 1000watts and it ate coils of various woofers regularly. Have not been a fan of that particular amp since then...

Dukk, I'm totally with you dude. I think I'm going to sell the 1001d and with that money get a xtant A6001 (600 watts RMS + subsonic filter) and a decent box.
Thanks, I'll keep an update, and you may see my amp in the 'for sale' section very soon.

Ok, here's the update. I took the 1001d into an authorized dealer in the area and it turns out that there is a bad solder in the connector. It's a cheap fix and the amp is currently in the shop.
As for my pre-conceived power problem, I've discovered that my Golf has a 120 amp alternator; which is pretty big for such a small car. So I'm gonna go ahead and throw the xbox and LCD in.
Now optimally, I would follow Dukk's advice and get a vented box, but as the 1001d has no subsonic filter, I'd be terrified of ripping my L7 apart. The only solution (I'm told) to an amp without a subsonic filter is an external crossover with one. I've looked at audio control stuff (2XS) but it's too much money for more, or easier, bass which is not really neccessary in my opinion.
With a vented enclosure I imagine I could save some serious power while maintaining equivalent output, so I'm still mulling over the idea. Ultimately, we'll see what happens once I get the amp back.
