Applying sound dampening material
 

I recently upgraded my head unit from Sony to an Alpine 9887 (amazing difference in sq) and thought I'd pick up some dynamat at the same time. I may have done things the hard way because I got the bulk roll for my doors instead of the door kit, so I have to cut and roll. Also, the instructions seem to indicate removing the weather poly from the door. Any advice?

Yeah, good to know, I tend to be in a hurry when I'm installing...

So is it necessary to remove the poly when installing? It's kind of cold right now so I'm thinking the dynamat might install better in 5-10c weather rather than zero.

in this weather your best would be to use a hair dryer when applying the material, or use a heat gun if your have one. There really is not a wrong way to do as long as you cover as much as you can with it, on the inner and outer doors skins, just make sure to open up the holes for the door panel to go back on, if you cover over them, it also does not hurt to add some to the inside of the door panel as well. also I shold not to make sure you don't put too many layers that you can't get the panel back on.

Okay, now I've got the pass. dr apart, and have removed the weather poly. How important is it to maintain the moisture barrier, because under the poly there are some large holes, one over a square ft! It seems it would be pretty tough to do the door in one whole piece of dynamat, so I cut it into two, and of course the one hole in the door is right on that cut, so I can't maintain the moisture barrier unless I now get some new poly and install it over the hole behind the dynamat.

Any advice?

Remove the poly vapor barrier. Ideally you will have a solid layer of dynamat on there when done so it isn't needed.

Cover large holes (IMP anything over the size of a fist) like that with 1/8" or 1/4" plastic so you can dynamat over them too.

Wipe the metal down with something to remove dust and preheat it with a heatgun or hair dryer if it's cold out.

wipe the panel down with acetone first to get better adhesion. heat works great too.

Thanks for all of your responses, I've finished my two doors (coupe) and have noticed a marked improvement. I'm going to take my car on the highway just to see how quieter it is at highway speed.

Careful, its an addiction, I started with front doors and loved it, now my car is in pieces and I have about 250 square feet in there of the stuff and still want more!.....it's nice to drive a coffin.
