The art of discussion

Guys and Gals.

I have been reading posts here for some time and I am often dismayed by the rudeness of the replies when you dont agree..
I have been called sucker, looser etc...and worse.

calling people names, attacking them because of their opinions or comments whether you agree with them or not does not make you any better or win the argument. It just shows that you are immature...

If you disagree with what someone says...Say it politely, dissagree with the idea if you like, back up what you say with facts...and dont attack the person. This sort of exchange may work fine with your buddies...but will not get you anywhere in the real world.

so if someone says..."walmart house brand speaker are the best"
instead of saying..."you f*&%ing A hole... you have no clue of what you are taking about"
say
"maybe the ones you heard are better than the stock speakers you have in your car.. but try to visit a good car stereo shop and listen to others...there are many brands that have excellent reputations and are acknowledged as being among the best in the world"

Also there is a difference between a personal opinion, such as the preference of one brand vs another, which we are all entitled too and incorrect facts...

I see a wide range of knowledge and experience here...and it is great for the inexperienced to learn from the more experienced...
So for the inexperienced...remember you may just know enough to be dangerous... and get into trouble. Often an explanation of something is an oversimplification and you need to dig deeper for the answer..
and..for the experienced...we can always learn new tricks... We may have done things the same way for years because that is how we learned it... but may not know why... there may be better or different ways of doing things that are perfectly valid also.

there...Have a good week.

Argument is the exchange of ignorance
Discussion is the exchange of ideas

I wholely agree with you zoomer, and thank you for bringing it up. There is no reason to slam someone personally, just because you don't agree.
I've given up arguing with anybody. I've unsubscribed from any and all threads that become abusive. It's not even entertaining anymore.

I'd like to see this site stick with useful information and discussion.

I have seen that happening in a few other forums too, including the SC car club forum. unfortunately some people are like that in front of their keyboard.

Its also one of the reason I don't post as much as I use to. :ohwell:

i occasionally slam people for being idiots, but i try not to get upset when someone has a different opinion.

that is one of the major problems i have with the internet, there is no accountability.
if i insult someone to his face, he maybe gets pissed and takes a swing at me.
ok, whatever, sometimes thats how it works.... if i get beat down cause i did something wrong, so be it.

but on the internet you can call people names all day long and nothing ever happens, sure maybe youll get banned eventually, so, you just release and renew your IP and sign back onto the forum under a new name... but really, how often do you see anyone get permabanned for being rude?

Hehe, this happened here before. :)

I was a moderator on a forum a few years ago, and we had to permaban a few individuals.

always a fun experience

Good post!
I'm going to quote this for a few other boards if you don't mind as this was written well, that is if you dont mind.. I've found that this is the time of the year that people start going bonkers because of the weather and such.
