I am looking for what you guys think in your experiences are the best 6.5" driver for around $300-$350.
This could be a component set... or just a pair of drivers. The reason I say this is because I have 4" Alpine Type-S coaxials in my dash that are highpassed, so they are acting as my tweets pretty much. This is going in the door of a 4runner, and I listen to almost ALL types of music. Hip-hop is probably 65% of that, but I do listen to metal, alternative, classical, electronic and anything else that tickles my fancy. Thanks guys, youve all been a big help in the last few weeks. |
What frequency range do you plan on using it?
That is a formidable budget, you can get VERY good drivers for that. Adam |
frequency?
Oh man... Im a newbie, sorry for not mentioning. I have no idea... I would like it to play all of my midrange if that is possible. I have two 10's in the back (in the future this will be upgraded to.. well Im not sure yet) and I want to fill in the gap between high end and bass now. |
if your spending that kinda cash, i would make sure that you get them installed correctly. i.e. sound deaden the doors, seal them off etc.
|
Yah I was gonna do that when the time comes.
I will most likely be posting a thread about that sooner or later :D lol |
I run the Alpine Type S 4" Coaxials in the front of my 93 Toyota p/u and to balance I run the Type R 6.5" Coaxials in the rear. The soft dome tweeter is very smooth and is very ambient.
The SPR174A Alpine Type R 6.5" Coaxials retail at $299.99. Only issue is that they are very deep and the basket is beefy. Some modification of the rear enclosure may be needed. |
hmmm
the doors in my truck are pretty shallow. Not sure if that would work... I maybe could, but ide have to get my door panels chopped up a bit maybe... which I want to do anyways, but its just more cash I gotta save and then drop on it. |
whp up a spacer plate. Should take less than 5 minutes.
|
would it be hard to make a spacer that would angle it up and in... in other words, more at the people listening to the sound ??
Maybe make the spacer bigger on one side so it makes the speaker sit titlted. Have you ever done this, or seen it before? Any other way? Any tips on making a spacer plate look nice too... ? |
Something like this would work: http://www.freepichosting.com/Thumbs...7600/126/1.jpg

where would I find something like that?
I hope your not suggesting I make it! lol those are sweet though.... |

Oh ok...
hmmmmmm, I'll try and figure something out |
I really like the JL XRs... VRs are good too if the XRs are too high for the budget..
The Adire Koda6.1 set also went down in price quite a bit... and they're a very good set. Improved now so there's no surround issues, and they come with full mounting supplies. |

Vifa, or Dynaudio. I have Dynaudio Speakers front and back, both pairs cost me about $200 total :D . I am one happy guy, EVERY single person that has ever been in my car has commented on how beautiful they sound. go to http://www.madisound.com  that's where I got mine. WELL 'VERY WELL' worth the money. You wont be disappointed.

u should seas lotus and scan speak, until now they are the best speaker that i ever heard (in that price range).
|
CDT looks attractive to me after reading a bit.
Wicked stuff they produce |
Well there's an inherent challenge/potential problem in having the same frequencies coming from two very different locations in the front of the vehicle.
If you like the way the 4's in the dash sound, maybe try and x-them-over a bit lower, like around 300-400 HZ (depending on how much power and how steep a x-over slope ... the steeper slope allows lower x-over point...more power usually needs a higher x-over point if you like to crank it). Next step would be to run your door speaker in well dampened/sealed door (use the door as the enclosure)from around 60-80 Hz and up to match the 4's in the dash...blend them up until they sound good, probably somewhere in the 300 Hz range, again depending on x-over slope, lowpass this time btw....play with the x-over slope & point here as it will have a great influence on the way it will blend, for example you might choose to x-over at 150 Hz lowpass and 6 db/Octave slope on your door speaker, or 300 Hz at 24 db/Octave slope, use your ears to decide. Then again, you might decide to use the dash speakers as tweets only and put a whole new set of comps in the doors... |
sounds good :D
I wish I understood better about all of that stuff... anywhere where I could read enough to understand what all those mean, and how the different HZ's relate to the actual sound of things? thanks |

How about staying local with AVI Sound. They have some very good component sets in the price range you are looking at. AVI Sound
|
i built those this summer, and those ones didnt turn out as nice as i wanted. built a cuople of sets after thet using mb quart rce 216s, they looked and sounded awesome. lots of bass, and they imaged their asses off. pm me and ill send you pics.i could build some 4 you and ship them. very strong and only weighed a couple of pounds
|
by the way ...quart also make an "add a woofer system" that is very nice.the model# is rce 216, and comes complete with a crossover system thatmakes it perfect for your application. they would hook up in parralel with your current front speakers. if i were you though...i would diconnect the 4s and go to a good component set in the doors :D
