it's one that is physically connected to the antenna input as opposed to a Radio Frquency modulator that "beams" the modulated (converts the input to FM signal) FM signal to your radio. The "wired" ones are much less susceptible to interference and can offer SQ like a good FM station.

ah, i see. Does they also typically function as FM antenna's?? or does it use up every FM channel??

no normally the antenna plug into the fm mod and it plugs into the antenna port. You can usually set the fm station to 1 of 2-4 stations...88.7 for example and then you just tune the radio to that station to enjoy your fm modded tunes.
