I have never researched or even concidered going active. I assumed it took more then just a 4 channel amp to do it. Don't I need a different head unit or some kind of processor to do it? Also, wouldn't CDT be able to do a much better job tuning it than a ham fisted noob like me?

Checking bcae...

All you would need to go active is to pick up a 2way+Sub outboard crossover. A Coustic XM5 or XM6 would be perfect, they are cheap used, and a great quality piece.

I checked ou the XM6 manual...my head started to hurt. I'm struggling with a passive install, that might just drive me nuts fiddling with everything.

Nah man, don't be intimidated. Preliminary settings are:

Sub: 70-80hz

Midrange: 80-100 high pass to 3500-4000hz low pass

Tweeter: 4000hz

That'll get you in the ball park

^^yep, what he said...active is easy, and so much better. Usually with comps I'll start with the passive's cross over points and slope as listed in the manual (if it's listed) and then adjust to my liking as I listen to the system.
