I just bought a 2003 Ford Explorer and I want to put some speakers in it because the stock ones are terrible.

whats your budget? I'd suggest the audison voce AV K6 6.5" components for that vehicle.
incredible sound quality speakers. very vocal and clear and dynamic response.

retail is around 700$

 

Wow I have a 2002 Explorer and in the same boat I put some Arc Audio 5x7 in the front doors now for the back doors I was going to get them adapters to put 6.5 components I think that would balance out the sound ok.

THAT WOULD BE INSANITY... upgrade your FRONt components first. then rear if needed. not the other way around.
invest in components and an amplifier for the front then add as needed.
