new question, newbie question too.


so what component is more responsible for the reproduction of lower notes, like in the 30's up to the 50's and 60's (maybe dreaming there), the box or the woofer? reason I ask is I'm planning to go with 4 12''s or if I have to 2 18''s. I originally had 2 12''s and 1 18", the 12''s hit nice, but the 18'' hit low and nice. I'm wondering if it was the box that was responsible or if it was the subs. they're nearly the same square inches so I figure more or less the same air is being moved, but the 18'' moves just a bit more, and bass, all sound really, is just movement of air.

either route I'm hoping to tune around 37 or 38 hz or so, but like I said, which one is more likely to drop low, still hit the 50's like its going out of style (still gotta wreck jaylat and Paul in 39.9 in the process)?

Do you still have the 12's? if so just buy 2 more or go with 4- 15's. :sly:

just so you know I originally qualified for 49.9 but nobody was in the class so I requalified for 39.9 :cheeky4: and that was with the 12''s, but I sold them to my cousin with my old amp and just got my refund today so I've got money to spend. I still kinda wanna do 4 12''s but if the 18''s get me the lows I like then that'll be the way to go. Oh, and since I did 39.9s with the 12''s, when I get my 18'' back I should be doing the same, which means I'm gonna continue to smash everyone. Don already got the trophy for Canadian champ engraved with my name, I'm picking it up from him on Thursday. sorry bro lol. but yeah, thats my dilemma now, 4 12''s or 2 18''s. the benefit is the 12''s I can keep my third row. 18''s turn it into a bench in my basement.

I mean, I figure tuning to 38.5 hz or so would be great with either set up, and then my chopped and screwed music will sound good, but I have no idea.

Chopped & screwed won't work well with a 38.5hz tune. What about a 4th order with a huge sealed box and a tune of 40hz? Slam 40hz and have an f3 of 25hz for the sealed part. The 18 probably sounds lower because of the (?) lower f/s, more cone area (not much), and higher efficiency. Why would 12's be better in the higher frequencies than 18's? Cone area is what's going to keep your lows and it should still be the same between 40-50hz as 12's. The difference in cone area is comparable to an 8" sub but the efficiency should be much better. Use the 18's in the largest box possible, around 10 cubes each ported @ 40hz, the roll off might not be as hard with more space. For SPL does a setup get louder with more airspace? Do you really need a third row of seating? What's wrong with seating 8? If you want it to get low than do a wall at the back, by the time the wave hits the front, even the roll off stuff, it should be pretty damn low @ 40hz by then, it sounds like this is going into a van.

Only thing I don't like about using 18's in NO MIDBASS. You need some 8's or 10's in the doors to get a decent balance. :ohwell:

Midbass is 80-300ish anyways?
