buying used stuff?

Sooooo I was asked to help my niece buy an audio system for her car. She takes me with her to a friend who is selling 2 12" Clarion subs in a sealed box. Everything looked good on the surface, but then he tells me he had to repair 1 of the subs because the seal & excursion ring came apart. This is when things start going down hill. He pulls the repaired sub out to show me the repair job & i now see the terminals are electrical taped to the leads. Also because the terminal is broke the leads have been moving & scraping on the sub basket & are now bare.

Oh if that's not bad enough his girlfriend tells me that that sub he repaired always sounded louder then the other 1 WTF? I'm no professional or pro but when you have 2 subs run from a single amp are they not suppose to be equal???

I didn't recommend my niece buy this system.

no doubt. Unless one is experienced with them, speakers are the one thing that should never be purchased used IMO.

Agreed.

i am also a little afraid of the bare speaker lead wires touching the steel speaker basket & arcing could this potentially cause a fire too? In a sub box that has dampening materiel in it?

You don't want loose tinsel leads. They will pull out.

I can't believe you're still contemplating these..

As soon as I heard "repair" I would have turned around. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's safe to assume the Clarion subs are of standard quality, and should be fairly easy to replace or buy new, so why not just buy new?

IMO, if it doesn't work 100% as it should, you shouldn't buy it. Unless you know how to fix it.

Lower-end Clarion subs new are dirt cheap.

no i am not still contemplating buying these subs, i am just more worried about someone else getting them & not checking them over as good as i did. :(
