Can boxes be sold pre-tuned?

So bassworx has a vented box that's 1.8 cu. ft. and it says it comes tuned to 36hz.

Looks about perfect for my Type-R, but I'm wondering...

Can boxes be sold pre-tuned without drivers in them?

I thought the boxes had to be built around the driver specs, or is the tuning frequency of the box regardless of that?

A vent of a given diameter and length in a box of a given volume will be tuned to a specific frequency. THis is independent of the woofer.

The rub comes in how WELL a woofer works in that generic volume and tuning. This is called alignment and many people forget that it is as important for vented boxes as it is for sealed ones. :ohwell:

So if I go to the store and see enclosures I'm interested in, I should take down the cubic feet and tuning frequency and plug them into WinISD to see how my driver will respond in that box?

Exactly.

Sounds good. Thanks!

Now does anybody know where to get quality enclosures for a great price?

I like the Bassworx stuff, but I don't want to pay more for the enclosure than I did for my driver.

Considering that the box will make or break the output you want, you may want to reconsider you last statement about the investment in the box.

Or do what any normal person would do and build your own for a fraction of the cost. Its really not that hard if you know how to use a drill and a saw. I did both my boxes for under $30, and i was quite impressed by the finished product. :smilie_da

I'm actually looking into getting someone that does this sorta thing for a living, make one for me, so I don't need to set aside a whole day on the weekend trying to put this thing together.

I would be comfortable making a sealed, or round ported box, but now that I want a vented, it's a little more trickier, and would rather have someone with experience do it.

I find slot ports are easier to do than round ports.

When it comes to the physical building of a box, ported and sealed require the same level of experience. Planning a ported box is more difficult - but you've got WinISD and if you understand the results displayed, then you're in business. Personally I find round ports to be the easiest - go to an industrial construction site and pick up a scrap piece of 3" or 4" PVC. You shouldn't need more than a foot in length (unless the box is small or tuned stupid low) and that is just scrap to builders. I've built 6 ported boxes, and all of my ports I pulled from a dumpster. I think you should give it a try. Its fun.
