can i use 2 different sized subs that are different brands.

i have been planning on adding two 8" subs in a sealed box in my backseat to add higher punchier bass to my 12" kicker l5. ive been looking around and i think ive settled on 2 8" alpine type r. i thought i had it mostley figured out but then i started reading online that if you have different sized subs or different brands they can cancel each other out. is this true? will it be fine if i seperate the frequencies? somethine like the kicker handle everything up to 70hz then the 8's handle 70-200hz. will this work? what would you set the crossovers at? i just dont want to buy somethin thinkin its gonna sound great then sound like sh*t.

Here is a question for you, what are you running for front speakers? Are they running off of the head unit power or a separate amp?

my fronts are 6 1/2 and my backs are 6x9. both are mtx, not sure of model because they were in the car when i bought it. i have a 760 pioneer amp powering all 4. they're great speakers and handle the 360 rms going to them but they dont hit low at all and the kicker does the low lows really well but i want something to fill in the gap between them.

Ok. What vehicle is this in? Have you done any sound deadening in the front doors? Are the speakers highpassed off of the amp?

2001 toyota solara. no sound deadening. they're not highpassed yet but they will be when i get the new subs. i know putting dynomat or something in the doors is gonna help some but ive pretty much made up my mind that im getting the 8" type rs unless somehow they will cancel out with my other subs

I have heard that cancellation could be an issue, but in 15+ years of having systems I have never mixed and matched sub sizes. My point is that deadening and making sure that the door speakers are mounted solidly will improve the bass/midbass performance from them, which will generally improve the overall sound of the setup as it will give the impression that more bass is coming from up front. For example, in my truck all I am running are a pair of 6.5" components in the front doors, and a single 12" MTX sub in a vented box. My doors are deadened heavily, and the speakers are mounted very solidly to MDF baffles. I am only running a Kenwood 75x4 amp to the setup, and my fronts are highpassed at 50hz, sub is lowpassed at 50hz at 24db/octave. It sounds great (to my ears anyways). It all blends very well. What type of box is the L5 in, sealed/vented? Is the box size correct for the airspace requirements of the sub?

If you separate the frequency ranges they play in then you should have no problems.

I would rather work more with what you have but to each their own. :ohwell:

the kicker is in a ported box that was made for L5's. i appreciate all your input but i find the kicker doesnt do very well above a cetain range and the speakers just dont go low enough. i know putting sound deadening in would help but i just dont think the speakers will satisfy what i want.

It might be worth the time to take the front door panels off and see what is in there. They might be entry level speakers, they could be mounted poorly, and they could be wired up out of phase also. I would look at this before adding in extra subs personally, maybe a better set of front speakers with some deadening added in would improve your sound. Good luck.

i might consider that do you have any suggestions for 6 1/2 speakers that would be good for the bass? i am adding tweeters soon so i will be in my door in the near future. also i have alot of experiance with subs, amps wire ext but never actually put new speakers in myself. i'm just curious how hard is it on average to get the door panel off?
