Can Temp. effect T/S para???
#1
I have been noticing that my system, perticularly my subs sound alot better when they are cold. They sound more crisp and clean with more punch. More accurate as well. Although the SPL is reduced a bit. I know when certain drivers are cold (depending on material types) they can get stiffer.
What effect on what T/S paramiters would be taking place?
Would a different box allow my drivers to sound better like this all the time.
Any insight or comments would be greatly accepted!

That is interesting that they sound better. The rubber surround on the driver gets stiffer when it is cold and consequently the efficiency of the driver is slightly lower. The material used for the actual cone is generally designed to remain constant under a fairly wide temperature swing so it is not a factor. Tweeters on the other hand often contain a small amount of oil called ferro fluid, which is stable under high temperatures but does get more viscous when it gets really cold. Voices and horns tend to have harshness to them when you first crank it up. I have noticed he biggest change in the midrange. The sound (with good drivers) seems to open up after they have been playing a while. Music with lots of bass speed the process up.
Off the topic but somewhat humorous - I use to make trips in a van to the US to sell high-end speakers to audio dealers in the US. They always sounded much better in the summer. One cold day just before I was about to leave on a trip to the US I got the bright idea of cutting a hole in each one of the crates and ran a flex pipe from the van heater into the boxes. I was pretty proud of my ingenuity. There were pipes running everywhere. When I arrived at the boarder, the US customs agents went into code red at seeing this strange apparatus from outer space in my van. Four hours later after pulling everything apart I was allowed to leave. This was long before 9/11.
