Canadian winters

hello, as you may know winter is coming, and i was wondering if i should take my amplifier out of my car for the winter. im expecting it to be at least -20 and i cant decide. there is also the fact that the tempurature in my car is going to be going up and down every time i drive it as i have the heater on. Is such a low tempurature going to harm my amp(t31000d)?

i use a battery blanket for all my speakers and amps
so i can prewarm them before using
i have it on a timer so that it is ready for use when i leave

this is something i have been starting to wonder lately too because i just bought a new amp and subs and wasnt sure if i should put them in considering winter is right around the corner .... altho i know so many people that dont do anything diffrent in winter.....

lived in edmonton and had a stereo for about 5 years now....it's gotten down as cold as -53 (with wind chill) the one day.....and my stereo is stiil surviving. (Granted i never had an indash screen then).

I think assuming you let the speakers/amps warm up before using them you'll be fine. I try and get to the point where it's warm in the cabin, and i gotta turn down the heat, which is likely before hte speakers are cold, but they've done ok for the last couple of years so meh.

Plus, i think most car stereo equipment is made with varying weather patterns in mind.

yea ive always wondered what can go wrong if you let your car warm up n have the stereo off, then keep it real low for a while after......i dont know i think im gunna put my stereo in before winter...

Maybe at the coast, but not the rest of BC.

I would maybe be concerned if I lived in Saskatchewan, but otherwise I would not wory about it.

ive always followed the policy of letting things warm up gently.
i usually turn on the stereo, low volume and let it work for a few minutes, maybe 5.
by then the heat is coming on pretty good, so i feel ok to turn it up.
and the amps...well, they heat up themselves, lol.
its just the sub i worry about, all alone in the trunk.

There has been mornings when I've seen ice crystals on the cone and surround of woofers. You would think that when those ice crystals melt while warming up they would get damaged. Diddnt seem to harm them whatsoever:ohwell:

sorry for the double post, but another thought...

how many of you have parents/friends/girlfriends who just hop in the car, start it and crank the stereo right after startup??
the way i see it, if low quality factory speakers can tolerate that kind of behavior, one would assume that slightly gentler treatment should be fine for a decent speaker.

matt_p 10-11-2006 12:09 AM

now that ive got this on my mind i remember a few years back my one friend took out his subs n put his cheap ones back in because he was told by someone that they can freeze up on you and then they will blow or something like that :dunno: :dunno: .... that sound like bs?

I'm on my 6th system in my 4th car over 17 winters. (Yup, I'm old) I've never had a problem because of cold. My old Pioneer cassette used to go a bit slow till it warmed up, but i've never had a problem with CD's, amps, subs or speakers.

cavy man14 10-11-2006 10:53 AM

Man the colder the better for your amps

as long as you don't get any frost in your amp then your alright

Canufeelit 10-11-2006 11:36 AM

Ditto to most in here.. i've kept audio in car all year round.. ( feeling -42's n such) just create a warm up period and you should be fine. The main problem is hot metal ( amps) in a cold environment.. if for some reason the car starts to get cold quick enough ( when car is offf after driving round) it MAY create condensation within the unit.. water in amp=not good. With the new more pocket hurting stuff i have now it's all coming out for winter.. minus the head unit.. i'll see how it takes the cold..

zzzzzzz 10-11-2006 11:52 AM

i will rip it all out just to re do the set up befor nxt yr shows
but if i was not doing that i would not remove for the cold time of the yr
you can f up your parts by removeing them more then what the cold will do
