Car Alarm needed asap
Does your key for your Cherokee have a grey casing or a black casing ??
If it is grey, it has the factory immobiliser which is actually quite good, but the security system itself sucks !!
The theives may not be able to steal it, but it aint gonna prevent them from breaking in.

Why not check out the sale of Viper 790XV by one of the members here on this board. Although this is a starter/security combo, you don't necessarily have to hook up the auto start.
I picked one of these from him for $200.00. Good transaction, no troubles.

Go to a Future Shop or Best Buy and check it out, life time warranty on the gear and install.
(one down side with the Vipers, they seems to eat remote battries)

Well, I was kinda expecting a mixed response...so far I got it. Yes, the casing around the key is grey and apparently the immobilizer is one of the best out there, but as mentioned that doesn't really help re: breaking into my car with a sub-par alarm system. I've taken a few photos of my stuff in the Jeep and cataloged them for insurance purposes, just in case. Has ANYONE HERE actually done an alarm install on a 2000 (and up) Grand Cherokee? I would like to hear about it. Honestly I don't think it can be done properly (Father Yuli knows about it we were talking about it before on MSN). The guy who worked on the install is a really experienced, reliable fellow I know locally, he called around to other installers and even checked with Chrysler and apparently there wasn't much he could do with it???? Oh well I got my $500.00 bucks back anyways...
there is a way to integrate your stock alarm into the aftermarket one. i had that done on my 2001. Perfect Tones did it for me www.perfect-tones.com or u can also try 20 Hz Audio which is abit more expensive but they will be able to do your jeep for you as well.
the immobilizer is good but the rest of the alarm licks *****. it does nothing and is only triggered by...........i better not say this part......basically it is very easy to by pass the stock alarm while breaking into the jeep (but not the immobilizer, that will work no matter what u do)
u can not remove the factory alarm, it is not possible, but u can intergrate it 100%

Well that is good news. Do you remember what they charged you - will I get a discount if I mention you? (or will they charge me more lol). I'll give perfect tones a call tomorrow. I budgeted $500.00 for the alarm and the install taxes included - I hope they can accomodate me. Father - Did your power-locks work with the alarm too, or did you have to use both remotes - one for the alarm and one for the doors? You didnt get a remote starter either, right???
Well I called perfect tones this morning and the guy told me that it can be done, but there are a bunch of extra modules that have to be added to integrate the alarm - hmmmm sounds expensive and a lot more labour oh well I gotta check it out...

That vehicle is pretty easy, but you will need an extra module to control doorlocks and the factory alarm. As Yuli said the factory alarm is very easy to get around on that vehicle. If you are looking at just a basic aftermarket alarm we would charge $200 (installed) for an Avital 2100, $50 for labour on the doorlocks and factory alarm, and $89.99 for the DEI 455J interface module. I would also suggest a hood pin switch ($30), and back up battery ($80 installed). From there you could add whatever options you wanted (remote start, Prox sensor, window control). That should give you an idea for starting prices. If you wanted a better alarm such as the 690 of course it would cost more, but an inexpensive alarm installed properly will give great protection.
Well it looks as though my concerns re: the alarm for my Jeep are over. I'm currently getting a CompuSTAR 2-way alarm (Lumina Guy will like that) installed (right now, actually - the dealer said he would need it for about 3-4 hours), fully integrated with my Jeeps system, with the remote starter (it was a package deal worked out better). Apparently its the newest Compustar model out there (better-than-FM) with really really good 2-way range 6000 ft+ I think, the guy said 1.5 miles but I dunno about that - is that 6000 ft??) plus the guy has been doing installs for 15 years and he has done these CompuSTAR installs with my Jeep (he sells the unit). All said and done, $650.00 installed taxes included - a little more than what I wanted to spend, but at least I'll be able to sleep at night.
I'll follow up with another post once I've have a chance to play with the alarm and familiarize myself with all the features.

Thats a solid deal. Decent price, any time i've priced out the top end computer start pager alarm/starters it's been from 550-750. Only thing i'm curious about is what is the exact model of yours?
It's not the 2wss-as is it? (2way spectrum-alarm/starter)
