If all else fails, go totally 'Red Neck' with it...lol

Big battery, alternator running off a belt-drive motor, something like a table saw motor for charging system and call it a day

Not a bad idea, though just a big battery and a medium sized charger would do.

And most home amps that run off of 120V run 8ohm drivers and to buy something in the 800-1000W is going to cost alot more then what a PSU or DC power supply would.

If you run 12v from different rails together you are likely going to to blow up your power supply, which is exactly what you did....

I have a 2ohm stable class-H PA amp that puts out a solid 2kW of power, which I bought for around $450 shipped new... you can do the math on that one... and for the price of the DC supply posted I could probably find a nice Crown...
