Car Stereo + Speakers

Hey guys. I need a stereo and speakers for my 79 Camaro. I have no idea about this stuff. I don't want to spend a lot. What do you recommend I get? I have 2 small front speakers under the dash, but no rear speakers.

So, stereo and rear speakers.

What radio is in there? The stock one? Does it have a knob on each side and a display in the middle? Do you care if the dash gets cut into a 2"x7" hole for a standard size modern CD player?

The rears should be standard 6x9.

what's your budget? What are your expectations...car audio goes from mild to super wild and is priced accordingly.

Not really a budget here, but basically the cheaper the better. As for expectations, I just want to play Cds decently, and have speakers at least louder than the car. :)

And If was to go super wild on audio I would do it in my home, not my car.

Anyone can make a house stereo sound good. But if you want a rolling tin can to sound like a stage, take all the sound advice you can from this forum, some people actually do know what they are talking about, though I won't name names!!

99% of new head units come with a cage that will slide into the 2"x7" hole previously mentioned and hold the front of the deck. That hole will need to be cut in the plastic from the pictures you posted. You will want to use some form of metal strapping on the back of the HU to tie it to the dash and avoid the HU from getting rattled to ratshit. I think the front speakers are 4" I know some GM's used a 4x10 in the back, but I am simply speculating on the speaker size... Don't get many '79 anything in the shop. My experience with cars that age is under-hood (racing engine shop). I don't know of anywhere online that goes that far back either, so you may simply have to pull the speakers and see what they are.

According to the Crutchfield database, your veh can accomodate 3.5" dash, 6.5" door and 6x9" rear deck speakers. If it was my car and I wanted a relatively simple system I'd forget the dash, and get a set of 6.5" components (mid in door, tweet in best location based on trial and error). Then, I'd get a single 12" sub and box system and forget the rear 6x9's for now. To power it all, a decent 4 channel, with the front 2 channels for the front comps, and bridge the rear 2 channels for the sub. In the future I could always get my 6x9's and run the 4 channel to those, and get a dedicated sub amp for the sub. As far as decks, I'd get an Alpine as they have never failed me, but in your case..go shopping and look for a deck with 3 preamp outputs (front, rear, sub) with built in cross overs at least and any other important features to you.
