Buddy was asking me this the other day. Sadly i dunno what exactly causes this. Is it just too much power going to a speaker (subs) or is it too high of gain and pushing the speaker to hard? or a combination of both?

too much power goes to it which causes heat
the heats burn the voicecoil

most of the time too much power will not kill woofers but yes if the driver is ran for a certain amount of time it may damage the coils , thus clipping will also damage the speaker quicker than u can say " snap crackle pop "

Burning coils is a combination of heat build up over time.

So not enough cooling, too much power, or both; a square or severly clipped wave can cause it.
