Choice between these subs, what do you guys think.

Hey so here goes, I basically need a pair of 10's or single 12 from now untill June when I can do a whole revamp of my system. I'm stuck with some choices as below....

AudioBahn Special Edition AW1051SE 10's (Yes I know they have been out of business since '06) - In a Ported Box

Jl 12W3's or 10W3's - In a Sealed Box

Rockford Fosgate P212 S4 - In a Ported Box

Phoenix Gold Octane-R 10's - In a Sealed Box

They are all 4ohms except for the audiobahn with is dual 2ohm. Now I would like a clean bass with some punch in it to be heard, just not distorted.

Previously I've had infinity reference 12's, Max Caliber 12, Rockford Fosgate P3's, Planet Audio 10's, and Jbl 15 GTi, But the best one as of yet were a pair or JL 12W0's in a sealed box which sounded crisp and clear with minimal power being given to them. I'll be running my choice of sub/subs with a JL 300/2 until my MTX 801D is fixed.

Now these subs that I have to chose from are all under $100, as I just need something to get by until June but it needs to sound good and not distorted and floppy.

Let me know what you guys think would be best.
Thanks

i would choose the jl w3's either 10's or the 12's. Good sq with some punch.Since you had good luck with the jl w0's in the past i would try the w3's.I used to run jl w1's and they were clean and pretty loud

Sikk Nation 03-01-2009 06:32 PM

are the JL's W3V2's or the old Just plain W3's.

If they are V2's. that's the only choice worth mentioning in your list above IMO

danyman 03-01-2009 06:36 PM

i had the PG octane R 10's a few years back and i loved them. sounded great and loud for a sealed box. sounds better than the P2 from RF and well JL i dont know i havent heard them yet

3niDaPooh 03-01-2009 06:47 PM

well the jl's are the older w3's and I'm trying to stay away from all rockford punch subs as with my 3 different sets of P3's have all cracked at the dustcap and voice coil burnt from just a little bit more wattage from the amp. The audiobahns on the other hand are decent sounding but a bit distorted imo when turned up and they look mostly for show and not quality, I think i may go with the phoenix gold subs but i just arent certain as of yet. danyman what did you have pushing those subs that you had? BTW my summer sub is a Rockford Fosgate T1 12" in a ported box. Also this will be goin into a BMW 3 series and only the rear hand rest comes down for trunk access.

danyman 03-01-2009 07:53 PM

i had the 200watt PG octane 200.1 amp. it was underpowering it by 200 watts but dam it worked well lmao. sux that i blew one 6 months later tho

3niDaPooh 03-06-2009 03:42 PM

ok so the jl subs are the older w3 and both have had the tinsel leads re-soldered, the phoenix gold subs sound VERY distorted, the audiobahn 10's sound decent but they're 10" and dont really have a deep throwing bass to them, now i did manage to get my hand on a CERWIN VEGA 12D4 and it sound AMAZING!!! the bass is clean, not distorted, very deep sounding. Now my question is, how good is this cerwin vega sub as it already has been freshly recone done to it a few months ago and hasn't been used much since then. its 400rms and I know it can take this and alot more as i've had a 124 vega before and its was awesome as well. Let me know what you guys think.

Sikk Nation 03-06-2009 07:30 PM

If all this has been beaten AND repaired that should tell you about the quality right there. Used subs is a dangerous game, you never know whe the tinsel leads will go, you don't how abused they are. Try buying new, there's alot of pretty decent equipment out there that can be had at a very good price.

godzilla1978 03-06-2009 08:54 PM

you mentioned the infinity referance, new ones can be had for under a $100 and aren't that bad(remember their UNDER a $100 new) I had one in the past and should last you until june(infact I ran it until I got my FI 12" my buddy bought it off me and he's still banging on it now a year later)

3niDaPooh 03-06-2009 09:14 PM

well the thing is, I tend to kill my winter subs and the cerwin vega that I had before was one of a few that lasted up till now after I sold it the guy is still using its been a year later. I may go with the cerwin vega since its freshly reconned or the audiobahns which are new but the box is actually used. As for Infinity, the new reference subs cant take as much abuse as the older white face ones which I had before as well, a pair in a bassworx box bangin with a rf 10001db both took that amp and never gave me any problems.

So that being said if anyone has a pair of the Infinity 1230W's i'll grab them off ya otherwise i'm sticking with one of the 2 choices stated above. I just wanted some input on the cerwin vega 12D4 as i've only owned the SVC one.

i know i'll get bashed 2 hell 4 saying this but.......... the audiobhan awes12p OR awis12p subs are rather well made(ive had the awes12p) subs for years now....and i cant seem to kill em...with clean power...i put one to a wall sockett (bought 3 at the time) and it went for 2 &1/2 min and i gave up!!!!!!!!!!! it is still playing in my buds car!!!! (yes i gave it 2 him!! ) dont get me wrong its not the ultimate sq sub....but on e bay u cant beat the price...if they r still available...and tuff as nails... to a point(price relative) if i need to prove my point i can take a photo of my stock pile of my car audio....it ranges from team rf/serwin vega stroker/to rf . p1's and everything in between......

3niDaPooh 03-07-2009 07:13 AM

yeA man my old man has a 15" Audiobahn Immortal in his Astro Van and 1 coil is blown and theres a hole the size of a toonie in it and it still pounds the outa every ricer car he passes by...lol. But unfortunately my ebay account has been stolen and I had to cut off my paypal account because of it. Thats why I'm getting the 2 audiobahns and a box for $100 or the cerwin vega for $30 and i'll just make a box for it.

Have you looked into a new RE SE-10? should only for about 140-ish? Great subs on low coin and 2 of mine hit 140db at 1400 watts. the amount of wattage these subs can take is crazy.

3niDaPooh 03-09-2009 08:44 PM

Ended up getting a pair of Kenwood KFC-W3011 12" subs for $100 for the pair brand new with warranty.
Now im trying to figure out which type of box to put them in either a Sealed or Ported Enclosure. Keep in mind this is a bmw and only the tiny handrest in the middle of the rear seat comes down.
Which enclosure do you think would be better?

The last pair of those I saw sounded pretty good in one of the Bassworks prefab dual 12" slot ported box....turned out the volume is just about right for the subs and the tuning worked out well.....:dunno:

For a temp setup it might fit the bill.....

3niDaPooh 03-09-2009 09:49 PM

Im kinda staying away from prefab boxes as I hate how they are tuned, you get the low bass but the high bass tends to be very flappy. I'll build my own box but im just trying to figure out which type of box to go with sealed or ported.
