have you ever thought of going custom instead....
you will experience much better over all performance with a custom
enclosure over a prefab...

this isnt entirely true.....you would be surprized how well alot of woofers plot and sound in some prefabbed boxes, this isnt somehting im guessing at...ive spent alot of time plotting and listening to different woofers available from bassworx, etc, etc, and some of them do very well, some not so well.....

umm..Bassworx

sorry Dave but you REALLY lost me there...LOL
the port noise out of most Bassworx Boxes I'v heard is as loud as the sub (or louder)
with certain woofers
although I have heard a couple prefab set ups that were OK
...some of them do a decent number on the TL

BTW... I'm gonna stop by for a chat soon here
..what do you take in your Tim Hortons Coffee ????

woke up on the wrong side of the bed or didn't get any last night...??

Roy. A 03-02-2010 09:20 PM

yeah you're right my bad, no offence

when I can afford something better(car and system), I'll go that route

for now, I can get either of those for under $200

Roy. A 03-02-2010 09:22 PM

I would think DD would be the better choice assuming they actually really did put a little r&d into it as they claim but they wouldn't be the first high end company to put their name on some cheap crap just to get a slice of the market

Denonite 03-02-2010 10:23 PM

for 200.00 it's hard to go wrong with either. Both companies make good products, the gto subs are decent performers on their own...they won't break any spl records, but they sound good within their power range, and certainly good enough for normal music listening. DD makes excellent, expensive subs that have a great reputation everywhere, so I can't see them building a simple ported box so bad that their sub won't perform well within it's limits. Again these are 300 watt systems that aren't geared towards irritating neighbours, but to music listeners. Personally, I like the DD set up a little more, so if it was me, I'd get that one.

if you put a woofer in a bassworx box with 2 inches of excusion and kilowatt of power and rifle the everloving crap out of it, you will get port noise from lots of boxes prefabbed or not.....like i said before, prefabs arent for everyone or every woofer but lots of times the work just fine

ptownaudio 03-04-2010 09:41 PM

prefabs= fail custom sealed box easy sound way better

Denonite 03-04-2010 10:56 PM

If the prefab is properly built with sufficient volume and tuned to the frequency you want, a custom built box isn't going to do anything more. Just because someone custom builds a 2 cubic foot box with a 12x2.5x 34" port, won't make it sound better than a prefab that has the same specs. Rarely is construction integrity the issue. There are some very well manufactured prefabs that will more than do the job. The problem is it's very hard to find the exact box for the exact sub that you want to use. I've run into more than a few prefabs that had the mounting hole cut out so large that the sub was swimming in it. Others had ports the size of toilet paper rolls, and finding the internal volume you want is always difficult. That said, if you find a well built prefab that has the volume you need, the port volume required for the tuning, and the price is good...get it!
