Choosing the right subwoofer

im looking to buy a alpine-mrpm500 monoblock amp, which is rated at 500watts rms at 2ohms, and i cant decide on a sub to match it with, 2-10" a 12", but if i get 2-10" subs would they each have to be 250 watts each to equall the 500watts the amp has? what would be the best way to go any feedback is appreaciated

I would suggest going into an audio shop and listening to comparable setups. I think it would come down to your enclosure. Sticking with the Alpine brand, you could use a single 12" TypeR (500WRMS) or a pair of 10" TypeS (300WRMS) each. The 10" would get 250W each. I'm not sure which would give you the best output. The two 10" might have more output simply because you have two drivers, but the TypeR is a stronger driver, and could probably use that 500W more efficiently. There's also the size of enclosure you have to think about too.

I would suggest listening to each setup. Get the shop(s) to hook up that amp to single 12" and dual 10"s. Make sure that everything is wired to present that 2 ohm load on the amp.

Can we talk you out of the Alpine amp and talk you into a deal on a similar powered amp that is probably going to be less money for the same performance? Then we can find you a deal on a sub or subs to match as well. If this interests you, drop me a pm or msn to forbidden@telus.net. Have a look in the vendor section under Forbidden Audio, you snooze you lose december deals.
