Clarion sub keeps blowing up

2 Attachment(s)
Hi new to the site. I bought this setup a couple of years ago and it ran good for about a year then the left sub stopped working one day. Car audion gone wild sale was on again so i bought another one. Worked good for about a year again then again the left one stopped working. I thought it would clear but when the seat is up i think the subs might just tuch the seat a bit. I was pretty careful to turn the subs off when the seats were up but i might have forgot a couple of times. Do you think that would cause them to fail? I want to make sure it was not something else cause a cant afford to keep replacing them. Subs are pxw1251 x2 and amp is dpx1800. Thanks

touching the seat shouldnt play much of a factor in the sub blowing up im guesssing the one sub was getting more power then the other sub if you have a multi meter unplug the subs from the amp then turn the deck on and have playing as if you were listening to it then put the multimeter on the chanells they should read even if their not even then the one sub was getting more power and that was probably the problom or could just be that the subs cant handle the amp whats the power of the gear ?

A sub making contact with a seat would spell demise for the sub over a period of time for sure. It would wear right through one side of the voicecoils where it is rubbing due to the pressure being exerted on the sub where it is striking the seat.

luke99 10-16-2009 06:05 PM

ya but from the pictures it doesnt look like it would be touching very much

Are you kidding me? look at the seats folded down...you can see the subs imprints on it, and the left side looking at the picture has way more of an indent.

luke99 10-16-2009 06:35 PM

ya from that picture it looks like theres an imprint so why not push the box back scew it down or get grils to go over the subs problom solved typically a box like that were the trunk is walled offf is left open

Garageman1212 10-16-2009 11:15 PM

Yeah the left side is where the car seat usually is so it would have more pressure pushing down. Like i said i usually have the subs turned off when the seat is in there (two year olds hate subs but what do they know?) but I am pretty forgetful. Next question is should i drop another couple hundred bucks on another clarion? They sounded alright not the best though. Also they are crammed in there I had to grind down the bottom of the box to clear the magnets. Would I be better off with one 12 more power and a proper sized box? thanks for all the help.

luke99 10-16-2009 11:18 PM

why not build a box to the specs of the trunk find out what kind of box the subs like to be loud then build one that will fit in the trunk that way you dont have to worry about the subs hitting the seat how many watts is the amp ?

Garageman1212 10-16-2009 11:23 PM

The amp is 800w rms at 1 or 2 ohms. That was the biggest box that would fit through the trunk opening had to take the latch off.

luke99 10-16-2009 11:24 PM

ya if u could find another amp have one sub to each amp id say find a slot port box for that car

Garageman1212 10-16-2009 11:39 PM

The subs are only rated to 500w so the amp is a little under rated but pretty close. I was thinking just throwing the one remaining sub into my winter beater and starting fresh like an elemental designs 13Av.2 D2 + NINe.1 or something in a proper ported box. Looks pretty good and is cost effective. The bass bug hit me want to go louder haha.

luke99 10-16-2009 11:42 PM

lol once it hits u youll do anything to gain a db or half a db for that matter lol

Garageman1212 10-16-2009 11:55 PM

Yeah just like everything else in life guess thats why im so poor. So what would sound better and louder two twelves and 800w in a smaller box or one 12 and 1200w in a proper sized box? I tried making two seperate boxes to the proper specs and there was no way to get them in had to cut some off each then hammer them through the trunk opening but they looked terrible so i built that box. The trunk opening is 45"x 14" but it is a weird shape kind of like a mouth.

luke99 10-16-2009 11:57 PM

personally id say wall off that trunk if u dont use it wall it off for 2 12s have an amp rack in the back and go from there that way the seat can fold and not hit the sub id suggest a slot port , or go with a smaller box

I don't know what you guys are doing, but I have 2 10" Clarion signature series subs. They are rated 1000rms each. They are getting 1000rms each and have been abused since February. Including 14 SPL competitions this year playing 39hz test tones at full volume with gains and boost turned WAY up. NO problems whatsoever. I have no problems with suggesting Clarion speakers to anyone as I also have a 6.5" component set in my front doors rated 150rms. These are getting 230rms each and take it all day even with xover down to 70hz. Blew the first set I had but that was due to a 30-65hz sweep during a comp and forgot to shut them off first. Waranty replacement within 48 hours. :smilie_da I love my Clarion products and will not hesitate to purchase more in the future. :smokin:

Very proud of it thanks. :smilie_da For 2-10s at the time only getting 1100rms total in an SQ car in a box tuned at 34.5hz not too bad at all. This is not an SPL 1 note wonder fart machine here. I have several SQ trophies as well as DbDrag and Bassrace. How loud do you think it should be????

Yeah I tried to do both SPL and SQ this year. Will not be doing SQ next year so in the process of stepping up the game for next year. Might just get some stamped steel subs and do Street stock. :smilie_da

Interesting.....you have 2 separate vehicles to take to comps??......I wish I had your coin...... :ohwell:

Considering how much time and effort Nick put into his car, I think it does really well at both......a really good example of how you don't need a bottomless bank account to get good sound......:appl:

luke99 10-21-2009 09:20 PM

considering I have a car thats strictly for spl thats going to hit some very impressive numbers this year and have a sq car that sounds phenominal its called hard work and countless hrs of investment not having a bottlomless bank account ,

Considering I was talking about Nick's car at the time I don't know why you're getting excited.....the fact that you have 2 different vehicles tells me you have more time and money for this sport than I do.....:dunno:

If your time and efforts are paying off for you congrats......

luke99 10-21-2009 09:51 PM

well your implying that I have tons of money no thats not the case , all the money and time I do have goes into the cars I go to work its litterly all I do

Sigh.....you may have read it that way but that's not what I said......there have been enough threads with comments about guys who spend large $$ and have no clue what was done to their car.....I spend my time helping guys get the most sound we can out of whatever equipment they happen to have and still manage to have fun doing it.....:smokin:

Annnny way. I was looking around the net and all I can find is people competing in no wall nothing about what "a wall" is? Can anyone explain what a wall is or pictures so I can figure out what to build. As for clairion subs they arnt bad but my first system in my dakota was two ten inch jl 10w3v2's and I got A&B sound to do the install. They gave the truck back to me with the subs pressing hard against the seat, so I didnt think it was a problem. well after 2 sets of subs i finally put some grills on them and never had a problem after that. But that was well over a year with them pounding hard into the seats. These clarions I have had the seats down 99% of the time I might have forgot about twice in a year and they are fried. But they arnt bad for what they cost. Thanks

thats a walll littery a wall thats beein built in a vehicle to house subs

Garageman1212 10-22-2009 11:34 PM

hmm thats pretty much what it is. Like do you use the trunk as the box or do you still need to build the rest of the box inbehind?

luke99 10-22-2009 11:35 PM

usually what guys do is have their batterys and their amps in the back runn wiring through to the subs and seal it all off have an opening on the side for huge port most of the the walls ive seen have had atleast 15s in them
