Classic Car System....

Hi Guys:

New to the board here, I mostly Frequent Muscle car forums so I may be a little off , finding my way around here, I have yet to do the prerequisate search here so if you can point me in the right direction that would be great.
My handle "Big Sugar" comes from the Canadian band of the same name as some of you may know, (if you don't Search "You Tube") I also own a 1966 Dodge Charger that is called "Big Sugar" it's a 440 sixpack White over Blue Charger running a set of American Torque Thrusts.

In any event for the past 4 years I've been reaching into my glovebox to control my stereo and listening thru a set of dismall 4" speakers in the kick panel.
Until now. Gonna Cut the dash and mount the stereo where it should be and install speakers where they should be !!
(Screw the #'s crowd. I'm driving the car !!)
The Layout A 66 Charger goes like this. It's basically a fastback hatchback. 4 bucket seats, behind the rear seats is a cargo area (like a hatchback) but I also have a fold down door that lays flat into the trunk area.
(see link for interior pics of 1st gen Chargers)

The System

Head unit
Looking to use a Alpine head unit ( Model ?) (prefer light Green alumination, No DVD, Black in color )

Speakers
Thinking JBL thruout
4 by 10 Dash (optional)( Surround ??)
4 by 6 lower front doors (separates or combo)
6 by 9 rear fold down door (or 6" separates)
8" or 10" sub in trunk (ported ,sealed, Bandpass,???)

Amplification
thinking JBL Have room for two subs and amps easily in left and right flanks

Expectations
The Charger will be fully sound deadened, I'm looking for a Classic rock sound, quick bottom end punch with clear midrange. Surround Sound might be fun, I'm 43 years old so volume isn't a big concern and it's just got to sound good and sound right . Finish in the trunk will be a neat install not to flashy but show quality I'm thinking in the $1200 market with probably some Ebay buy's.

So there you are , Tell me what you think, Model #'s would help on the head unit. (good quality)

Thanks
Ron

i would say deck would go in the stock place center of the dash
for the look i would go with this MCINTOSH MX406 AM/FM/CD CAR RECEIVER STEREO NEW MX 07 - eBay (item 360038237684 end time Apr-04-08 12:23:42 PDT)
i would do kick pods with 6 1/2 in them with focal 165 k2p's in them with an amp running them
and i would do 1-2 10"subs in a ported box

zzzzzzz 04-01-2008 07:15 PM

do not cut that dash

Big Sugar 04-01-2008 10:14 PM

Don't be concerned with the dash, I only need to cut the bezel and I'm using a spare one that has already been hacked.
I'm really not concerned with keeping the "original look"
I'm not going to hack a system into good parts I have a second set of parts (Dash, Door Skins, Rear panel etc. that are already in poor condition)
I not worried about it's Value being adjusted because of some minor Changes.

I'm pretty much set on a Alpine/JBL system I'm just looking for some experienced "Sound" Advice.

Thanks

Mcintosh is simply amazing. look in it.

i was looking at your 1st post

ok that kills the mac and the focals with the $1200 but i'm big into my SQ set up and $1200 can go fast

Ok here it goes, hifisoundconnection.com will beat any competitors price on the net if you get all your alpine gear there u are set and will get better price on shippping as u are buying multiple items.

Head unit: Alpine cda 9887

Amps: For front stage Alpine PDX 2.150 For sub PDX 600.1

Sub: Alpine type R 12 SWR-1242D

Now for JBL

sonicelectronics.com sells JBL again offering to beat online competiors prices

Front stage: JBL C608GTi-mkII

Rear fill: JBL GTO627 powered from headunit

All this gear sholud be close to you budget however keep in mind u will need dual amp kit and 50 feet of speaker wire.

This would be very solid system!!!

I guess u could get almost all gear from sonic as they do stock Alpine aswell just dont see 9887

Big Sugar 04-02-2008 04:57 PM

Thanks !! That's what I was looking for ! a little reasurance.

How old is that Alpine Model 9887 ?
Prefer the Green illumination.
Are the Alpine HU's still as good as the older models ?

Alpine amp VS JBL Amps?
Alpine Sub VS JBL Sub ?

wuff 04-03-2008 12:02 AM

The 9887 is top notch and has four key button colours to choose Blue/Red/Green/Orange search Alpine's web site for specs and details.

Sub: with if you choose Jbl look at P1222
Sub Amp: JBL GTO7001
Componet Amp: JBL PX600.2

Alpine or Jbl whatever your choice is you won't dissapointed both are similar in quality, IMO my deciding factor would be based on price and presonal preferance.

ya that 9887 is a kickass deck thats the one im gonna be replacing mine with... do the imprinting and stuff... i dont think its all that expensive either

red rocket 04-05-2008 03:49 PM

9886 is the newer model, has the same options, but a color display and does ipod touch

Hey Guy's it's been a while I know.
I'm at the point of Soundproofing and reinstalling my Harnesses in the car.
I'm considering running a set of seperates (JBL) up front, I have an option for a set of twin 3" together in the center speaker grill (dash Facing up). I plan on 5" in the kick panels and the tweets on the dash facing up.
Out back a set of 6" components in the back seat area and a sub in the trunk.

My question is What wires do I need to rough in front too back before the interior goes back in (Battery in Trunk)

Are the dash speakers 3"worth the effort?.

With Components front and back to I have two much High ?

Again I'm thinking of a simple effective system. Single Amp OK but twins would be OK too.
Alpine Head unit (Mint Green illumination a must)
Alpine or JBL Amps and speakers

Thanks,
Ron

Hey Wuff:
Nice selections, Just pricing it out .

You mentioned Alpine type R 12 SWR-1242D
For a rear sub, I'm wondering if a 8 or 10 will give me the Rock bass that I need.
12" is a pretty tight fit in the trunk.

Also would a factory JBL style Sub box suffice ? It's nice looking and finishes well
I think Alpine has one as well

Thanks again
Ron

Custom Autosound Radios and Speakers for Classic Cars and Streetrods

kygreen 03-30-2010 08:01 AM

Wow that's gunna be a fast car...almost as fast as my geo tracker....I'm kidding haha I'd keep it simple and clean components in the front so a 6 inch midbass speaker with a tweeter mounted on your dash a set of coax in the rear for fill a 4chan. And mono to power a single type R in the back or somthing. He said himself he's not competeing or anything.

MR2NR 03-30-2010 08:51 AM

Are you open to options? At the age you are at now I can see why you would default to Alpine and JBL. For myself being much the same age and working in the industry for 22 years, this would not be my personal choice of a system. Have a 69 Cuda Convertable myself... not quite as old as I am....

Big Sugar 03-30-2010 04:47 PM

Sure Im open to options.

What have you got in mind.?

PM me your phone number and I will be glad to call you. I am still posted to Whistler right now as part of the security contingent (yes the athletes are gone but all the gear is not) so I am a little hard to get ahold of during the day (no net access). We can get a solid system figured out for you. My suggestion would be to keep it simple in the back of the car for rear speakers and to channel the savings into better front speakers. If you can squeeze a larger midrange into the kick that is where I would start. How much real estate are you willing to sacrifice in the the rear area? Where are you planning on mounting the amp and does it have a space limitation? Does bluetooth (legal issues in most provinces) and USB/Ipod control interest you?
