clif design amps

sorry i posted this is the SPL catagory and seem to be getting any responses so i thhought i would re-try it here, sorry for the double post

what is the deal with these things? i am looking for amplifiers to drive 4 12" L7 kicker subs. these amps seem inexpensive and look nice. they have huge power claims and they seem like a pretty good deal. i can have my pick from ebay sellers at around 180$. the problem im running into is that i cant seem to find any info about these. the answers i have come across seem to come from 16 year old kids saying they are crap, but nothing more elaborate then that.

i figure if they use lots of battery energy then this isnt a problem and if they run hot then i can plan for this too. but if all i want is lots of energy to drive subs then these amps should be the ticket? right? i figure 2 of the 2400watt amps should work to drive 4 subs

it seems like my money is better spent on little speakers and clearer sounding amps on all my 6.5" speakers.

my plan is to use this car audio set up to listen to dance music mostly with overriding bass. also i have a tv hooked to it and i need it to sound like a movie theater

oh ya the install car is a freightliner so space, batteries, and alternators arent a problem.

Clif designs is not a good brand. They are sold at XS Cargo quite frequently and are owned by the "Anaba Group" which is the same parent company that owns MA Audio and Visonik among others (I think Alphasonic as well). All of these companies seem to offer similar product and it is all over hyped and under performing. They have some amps that are larger, and do not put out the power they are supposed to, there smaller stuff is even worse. If you want to buy them thats ok I am sure they will work fine just do not expect them to put out the claimed power and look closely to make sure to read the rms power and not peak when doing comparisons because quite often they will market things based on peak power not rms like most companies

if you are looking at the 60.2 that amp probobly in real world will do like 700wrms x1 the only descent amps are the 2800 and the 4500, anaba went through a bit of a change a few years back and came out with these two designs to be actually descent amps for an SPL team, and as such these are the only two models that aren't garbage...they are still over rated but will do the rated 14.4volt power if you give them 17 volts instead of 14.4

your avatar makes no sense. you cant take a square root of a negative number.

using imaginary number theory we can solve that problem. your X will equal to i x (square root of 1). where i represents -1.

i just took a quick look at a few things and heres an example of what shocking is talking about

Clif Designs CD4800.1 rated at 5200x1@1ohm
It has the same board as the Impact digital devil which is rated at 3800wx1@1ohm

i am looking at either 2 of the 2600 watt amps or one big 4000 watt rms amp. i figured these were crap because they are offered at xs cargo and they are the cheapest ones on ebay. but i figured even with 2/3rds of the power they claim i should be able to drive 4 15" square kicker subs to their limits. i am still back and forth between hifonics and these monster clif amps. i am just wondering if the only thing that makes an amp "bad quality" is that it makes 1900 watt instead of 2200 im sure i would never be able to tell. i imagine if this was a competiton system it would be different story and i would be after those missing watts. however thats just not the case. im looking for big, loud and cheap.

1 of these

CLIF DESIGNS 4000 WATT MONO HIGH CURRENT CAR AMPLIFIER - (eBay.ca item 280224555162 end time 15-May-08 22:24:47 EDT)

or 2 of these

CLIF DESIGNS CD60.2LX 2400 WATT 2 CHANNEL CAR AMPLIFIER - (eBay.ca item 160238314842 end time 14-May-08 13:07:30 EDT)

i am very new to this and it makes sense to spend more time energy and money on the speakers that reproduce voice and fine sounds. am i wrong?

Jo-Psyko 05-13-2008 07:32 PM

what makes it bad quality is whats used inside of it, nothing holds up as well and honestly if you are looking at hifonics talk to shocking again, i believe he is selling a 4000rms hifonics amp right now? and the price is just ridiculous if i had the money id buy it yesterday!

Youd be far better off buying the hifonics stuff

and you are somewhat wrong, power is everything as well as install you can have so so speakers but have good power and be amazed if you have good speakers and lousy power it will all be lousy.... and you spend all that cash on speakers that are just going to wrecked with dirty power signals, not to mention you'll hurt them alot faster with to little power and dirty signals then you would with too much power

ShockingCanada 05-13-2008 08:20 PM

I am selling a Hifonics Cyclops 4000wrms amp one ebay the reserve is $550. I would buy that over the clif designs amp any day. If I were to pick one of those 2 clif amps it would definately be the 4000watt one, its not a great amp, its descent though...the other choice are crap don't buy those. Still I would spend the extra cash and buy a quality product like the amp I am selling to be honest. If you can't afford it then get the Clif Designs amp but just remember that on ebay you get no warrenty just like if you were to buy mine used so with no warrenty its better to buy a quality product that you can be confident won't give you problems. If the Anaba group is anything like it was a few years ago (which I am sure it is) then they don't even repair amps, if your blows basically you can call them and they will have no idea what to do with it other than buy a new one.

ShockingCanada 05-13-2008 08:22 PM

and I speak from experiance because in 2002 when Anaba was getting into car audio SPL competitons I owned 8 visonik VX900Ds (basically half of the 4000 watt one on there) that I bought from them under a sponsership deal, and after that I owned a VX4000D (the exact amp as the 4000watt cliff designs) and had nothing but problems with it cutting out and protecting and those are the two best amps the company makes
