Basically, when your amp/deck/processor runs out of jam the signal will become clipped.
Information lost to digital compression of music is different than clipping. With compression the software tries to decide what part of the signal is important and what isn't. It removes what it determines isn't. During playback the software attempts to recreate that part of the signal it removed during compression. How much was removed (low bitrate compression) and how well the software works are the variables.
