Cold Weather
 

okay so this morning it was -26 or -27 outside my car, and it almost sounded as if my amp was not on? Now because of all the extra options in my car i had to run my power wire underneath the car, my best guess is that it was too cold and the current was moving to slow to power the amp? or could my amp be screwed? any ideas?

I'm not sure about the cold slowing down the current...but are you running speakers with rubber surrounds?

If so, the rubber surrounds tend to freeze when it's this cold and become quite stiff, reducing the movement of the speakers until they warm up.

The prob for me is the rubber surround that too stiff because of the cold, after 20min driving it's back to normal...

yea they both have rubber surrounds, but they didnt really warm up at low volume, is warming them up at a high volume bad for them in the cold weather?

the fact that you play them will only heat up the voice coil not the surround and this can be dangerous at high volume. It's the rubber that need to warm up and that will only happen when it's hot in your car. If they are in your trunk,well it will take a very long time unless you can lower the back seat to let the hot air go in there

half volume for about 10 minutes usually does the trick for me. i'm in toronto, so we're sitting at around -14 today.

-38 without wind here and 15mins with mid volume and they are fine. ( for the speakers anyway) my subs havent seen a winter yet until my amp is fixed so i dont know how they will act here lol.

beyond the speakers playing at mid volume for a period, just your HVAC system warming up the ambient air temperature of the vehicle will warm the rubber bits of your speakers up nicely in 10-15mins.

if that temperture affected current flow...we'd all be in the dark. Do you really have to have tunes as soon as you enter the car? Let the f**ker warm up a bit. Don't be cranking the volume with cold speakers, remember, in order for the voice coil to stay cool, it needs the motion of the speaker. If the mechanical ability of the speaker is limited by the cold, and the voice coil keeps getting hotter and hotter...guess what'll happen...thermal failure...fried voice coil...just let the car warm up!

now the only thing is i dont have the fold down seat option so my subs basically have no heat back there except for when the voice coil heats up. i usually run it at low volume for the first 10 minutes, but lately i have had the subs turned off afraid that they wont warm up properly
