Designing a deck: your input is valued!

Ever felt like all the car audio decks out in the market aren't exactly what you want? Why are they slower than cell phones? And more importantly, why do they have terrible displays?

Well, I feel the same way. My friend and I are in the process of designing a new deck, from scratch, that actually belongs in 2011. We'd love to hear what you'd like to see in a high-end deck. We have a short 1-page survey that should take about 10 minutes to fill out.

Survey: http://bit.ly/epp8o7

Survey shortened by popular request! We already have a partnership with a partner in the of automotiveindustry to help develop this, but don't get overly excited, we don't expect to push anything out until 2012. At that time, you can get excited

Thanks!

Note: I am not selling anything, not gauging interest, not looking to get money or information from anybody right now. I just want to hear what you would like in a deck.

Mods: If there's an issue with this please PM me. Thanks.

question is why?

I've used aftermarket head units since like 1996 and til this day i find myself not using the better half of the features on most decks.

why do you want a "fast" deck? are you doing Calculus on it?

you want something fancier and faster than a regular deck then get a carputor.

Most of the touch screen decks I've used were extremely slow, as in taking several seconds between screens and to register commands.

If my cell phone can do it in 1/20th of the time, why not the deck?

And I would agree: if I were building it for myself, I would build a "carputer". But isn't that exactly what a deck is, just mass manufactured and distributed with no access to the OS? Pretty much, except they're slow :)

dont think you can compare a carputre to a deck, huge differences there.

besides, you can get a decent car puter for cheaper than top of the line deck, with every feature known to man kind. they do mass produce those things now, so the cost is fairly low.

i've used a variety of pioneer and alpine touch screen units over a long period of time, i can honestly say that the speed at which they proccessed commands and functions was never an issue.

how many people would honestly ditch their units to switch to one that's a second faster?

your cellphone can do it b/c it's design to do it. that's like saying, my head unit can produce a 25 watt RMS signal into 4 channels, why cant my cell phone? you know what I mean?

You do bring up good points! My point is: why AREN'T today's decks designed to do it? There can be many arguments for or against (more focused on audio quality, etc) and I'm not arguing them, I'm just saying "why not this too"?

Some people don't mind the speed of the interface, and there's nothing wrong with that. But maybe those people have other things that annoy them about their decks (or their car-puters), and I'd like to find out what those things are as well.

And yes, you can build car-puters for cheap, but at the end of the day people still spend $1500 on high-end decks. Why is that? I have my theories, and this is why I have a small survey out.

:)

i can tell you 100% it is not because of speed at which they proccess commands.

more like features, quality and brand loyalty maybe.

I've spent that much on a number of units, all touch screen types. I got them b/c I could play playstation in the car and watch video's while driving. Two particular brands I've stuck with b/c those were the brands I prefered based on past experiences.

Gotta agree with you there, 'cause they're slow as heck! :)

These are the opinions I'm looking for, everyone's point of view. If you have the time to put down your thoughts in the survey it'll be appreciated!

i started but it's way too long, so I gave up.

Alright, you're not the first person to say that so I shall listen.

Only the first 6 questions are now required and the rest of the survey is optional.

Hopefully this makes it easier on every one.
