My Plan

To buy Alpine 6.5" Component speakers for the front doors only. I will keep the original Toyota standard speakers for the back.

Now I am thinking about Alpine Type S or Type R speakers. I have heard that Type R speakers may require an amp to get the maximum quality sound and loudness. Is this true?

What about type S speakers? Does it also require an amp?

Im running Type R 6.5" components up front and 6.5" coaxials in the rear. Running off the deck, they sound pretty good. They REALLY need to be turned up loud to get them moving. Definately going to amplify them with 100 watts rms or so.

 

you don't need an amp for either set. It is always preferable to use an amp though.

 

I would suggest an amp, you'll get cleaner sound and your moneys worth from the speakers if you do.

 

Well, if you end up powering them with a deck, then S is a waaay better choice. A lot more sensitive and makes a better factory replacement.

 

What about that big difference in low-end frequency response??

 

amp or no no amp doesn't change the characteristic of the sound. with a head unit though you'll be getting distortion alot earlier on.

 

an amp always gives you better bottom end
the deck just cant produce the lows or the very highs with the limited range that the deck amp has
at any volume level you will here an improvement with an amp
so go for an amp as soon as possible !

 

old wives tale. down to 30hz the frequency response of most head units is pretty flat. It's when people try to EQ speakers to get that big low end curve that head nits have trouble keeping up because of the limtied power available. this drives the speaker into distortion far earlier. Too many people think midbass just means "Bass from a midrange" so they turn the loud feature on and bass is at +4or higher.

So technically you can get more bass using an amp, but only if you EQ it that way and ty to turn 6.5" woofers into subs.
