Dual Alternators in a Neon
 

Does anyone have any backround doing this?
I'm using a first gen, 96 coupe.
I've read that you have to use shorter belts when running two, but I was wondering if anyone had done this for my application before. I have a spot to mount the second one, right where my AC used to be.

I also want to know if I were to put a second batt for my system in my trunk, how would I wire the second alt to charge that battery only?

Any input would be appreciated.

You couldnt really do that, (where you only charge one battery). Just connect all the alternators and batteries, and you should be fine.

have you looked into just one H.O alt rather than two? you could prolly get into something custom around 200amps + that might require less modification than having 2, and you could still have the 2 batteries as well.

Of course one could do that. The only downside I see (as opposed to an HO alternator) is extra cabling, more modifications, and hp loss.

It's easy. Just picture two cars, set up each alternator as if it was a single car. Battery & one alt. in the trunk is one car, and the stock setup is the other. All your stereo connections, are wired to the rear battery, not the vehicle. This includes all grounds and remote power, for the latter, you can run it through a toggle switch.

Or, you could hook them to charge as one unit. A pair. Two peas in a pod. You'd probably need some additional inline diodes or the like to do this safely. Go with your first idea, two seperate systems.

Oh BTW, if you wish to compete with the system, from what I've understood, having two alternators doing two different systems is against the rules in all levels of dBDrag racing.

If you have two alternators, they MUST work together.

I'm assuming they do this because you could run one alternator at 16v, just for the stereo, and the other at the normal 14.4v for the car. To make it more for the "big boys", they're implying if you want 16v, it's ALL gotta be 16v. And that would mean popping ECU's and the like.

But I could be wrong. Do your homework BEFORE you do the job if you're wishing to compete with the vehicle.

And this is why I post. I am trying to do my homework right now.
But i don't think that I will be competing, and if I do, then it won't be with a neon. It's more like a daily-give you a migrane-street beater.

I would rather ask a million questions than spend money for something obsolete.

if your not going to compete, why bother adding it at all? upgrade your battery, and wiring, and you should have plenty of power for your system.
