DVC Sub w/1 VC Blown?

I just purchased a used DVC 4 ohm Subwoofer.
The transaction was smooth, However the sub wasn't in the box when I got there, it had just been removed.
The seller hooked it up, just resting in his sealed box. He claimed 600 wrms was going to it, it didn't really sound too great, there was some rattling sound that I enquired about, and was told that there was a hole in his box for wires to go through that was the cause of the rattle. Also bass output wasn't what I thought it should be.
Duhhhh... I bought it anyway, then brought it home and put it in my sealed box. After sealing up air leaks I could hear by moving the cone in and out manually, I could feel some scraping as I pushed down on the cone. It's really quite noticeable, and from what I've read on here and other sites, it could be indicative of one of the voice coils being blown.
I don't really want to go buy myself a Multimeter to test them, but if thats what it will takem I will go get one. But isn't the scraping sound enough to say that the VC is blown?
BTW: It did not produce this sound in Free Air when it was out of the box, only after I put it in the box.
And the only time I hear the scrape is when I push on the outer edge of the cone, it will not makea sound if I push directly in the middle if the cone.
Sub is an Alpine Type R SWR 1541D

Pushing on one side of most subs will give you a scraping noise, if it sounds good when pushed in the middle you're probably in good shape. Hook up one voicecoil at a time and see if the sub plays with each

^^^^x2^^^^ - you know you can get mutimeters for less than 10 bucks at canadian tire (could save you a lot of trouble)

took y'alls advice and hooked it up... it pounds pretty hard.
i notice that it lacks bass at different parts of songs, but I'm sure that is something else. With the box sealed up properly, it sounds very good, no rattling. Thanks for your help.

1. how do u know a coil is blown

2. the bass is "missing" in some parts of the song exactly b/c the box is sealed
