DVD Decks

These new DVD decks, what's the lowdown on them?

Do they play cd's, obviously they play music in dvd format. Are music companies producing dvd's with tunes on them? or do you need software and burn your own?

What are the best brands for SQ? Prices roughly?

Looking at a complete system revamp and would like some info on this

Thanks

ps: too lazy to do some research tonight.... LOL

My Kenwood kvt-817 plays cd or dvd disks with .jpeg, .mp3, .wma, and .mpeg 1 and 2 video files (my favorite feature cause I can watch music videos for my favorite songs). It also obviously plays DVD video with 5.1 surround sound with pre-outs for front, rear, sub, and center channels all 5V. It has a ton of other great features such as parametric eq, crossover, DTA, dual listening zones, and options for Navigation, music keg and two video inputs for whatever.

Great unit feature wise, you really get what ya pay for. Kenwood other kvt models all play the same file types but the crossover, and eq, and surround sound processing aren't there or are not of equal quality (excluding the 915).

I don't know if this helps at all, but Kenwood DVD units are a pretty good deal for the price (more features, cheaper than alpine; I paid apx. 1300 on ebay for my unit). Good luck with the system overhaul.

Alpine has the DVA-7996 which does all your cd/dvd/dvd-audio but has Optical Outputs. I don't know if you're that high-end in the car, but I'm running all optical in my setup, and there is 0% distortion then. Up until the amps. I think it's totally worth the look at, just that optical cables are VERY expensive and VERY easy to break, rendering it totally useless.

I couldn't find it on E-Bay, it might not be manufactured anymore, but here is the next model down:

Crutchfield sells the 817 refurbished unit for a ok price.

Now to the original poser, are you inquiring about DVD-A, or just regular dvd video playback?

Buzz 09-08-2006 10:32 PM

Not interested in a screen to watch movies, just looking for total SQ for a great price.

Here is what my projected new system will consist of:

DVD HU ??
Zapco ref 1100.1
Zapco dc650.6
Focal 165 k3p

Will be using my existing AVI SLS-300 subs.
