Whats happens when you buy it used of someone and then the unit locks up on you ? Are you basically screwed ? I have read that a lot of the 8 series unit lock up after power from battery is lost and ppl have to phone Eclipse to get it unlocked, but to do that you have to have the unit registered in ur name. Anyone had to go thru this yet ?

If ESN is activated, you need the cd that the owner used to activate it.

camel 01-27-2004 09:39 AM

make sure you can get that info from the seller. otherwise you might have some problems. it is a good safety feature imho. you might need the seller's mother's maiden name to set it up correctly. its been so long since i have had to bother i forget now.

Bulldogger 01-27-2004 09:56 AM

The seller should have deactivated the esn before selling it  You also would have had an opportunity to put in the key cd  , unless it came locked up, then your screwed. I'm not sure, but i think your gonna need the receipt from the seller now if it's locked up.

Well I didnt buy anything yet... I like to ask these things before I get myself in big doodoo... Anywho..... does anyone know who carries Eclipse in GTA ? Maybe I can get a decent price on the mid level unit there and not worry about a thing...

thanx

Just get the guy to make sure he de-activates the unit and then as soon as you power it up the first time make sure you set ESN. Also if your worried, get the guy to do a change of address thing with eclipse so you can pretend to be him if it locks up. It was mostly the 8053 that locked up and even so the problem has been fixed.

You can buy the cd player and if it locks up, no worries, it can be unlocked by a dealer. You will need to fill out a ESN change of ownership form, this way the cd player will be registered in your name and not the former customers. After this is done, the dealer will be give a new digital encyption code to blank your cd player, then you can code it with one of your cd's. Contact Jestar Canada at 514-745-8030 for directions to your nearest dealer.

Wow, I didnt know that was possible. I can do this at any Eclipse authorized dealer in canada? What do info do I need to do this?

Just had to ask I found Eclipse CD5442 for a good price I think (300$ CND) and needed to know that. This deck isnt new but was never installed in a car... it was a demo in a board and it is perfect in appearance and performance...

Any opinions ?

There is someone on sounddomain that can unlock Eclipse ESN units. I am not sure how he does it but i am sure if you search the forums and ask him he might help you out. Then again its sounddomain.

But I believe the transfer of ownership must be initiated by the seller, not the buyer. You can't just walk in with an eclipse, say you are the new owner, and get the esn paperwork done. I have seen eclipse take certain documentation as proof of ownership if the original owner did not initiate the paperwork(like if somebody was insane enough to leave an eclipse in a car that they traded in). The car dealer's paperwork showing the former owner's name/address has been sufficient.

SOME of the 03 Eclipse 8 series have had ESN issues(not being unlocked when the key cd is put in, etc), but it is easily unlocked with a 5 minute phone call to Eclipse(and then you should talk to your dealer about getting your deck replaced/repaired if it is a big issue for you).

Eclipse is aware of the issue, and I believe they have a fix for it(and have started fixing decks not yet sent out). Again, it doesn't affect all of the 03 8 series decks, just some of them.

The change of ownership is initiated by Eclipse or the dealer, not the customer, we have the documentation given to us to do this change. Before the unit can be registered and a new code given out it needs to be verified that it is not stolen, thus the original owner info is already known.

scarlemthug 01-27-2004 03:31 PM

So if I go to an eclipse dealer and i say I want the ownership transfered do I just give them my info and then they contact the original buyer to make sure its not stolen?

I would think you would contact the original owner and have them transfer ownership to you through Eclipse/local dealer.

I seriously doubt Eclipse is going to start contacting former owners to get the paperwork done. That responsibility lies on the seller of the deck imo.

Sure, I just don't think it is very slack, atleast here in the States. I could be wrong.
