engine bay re-wiring: big 3
 

I want to re-wire my whole cars main powers & grounds...IE 0 guage instead of the factoy 4awg. ...basically all grounds & alternator/starter power.
My question is what is the best wire?? can u use your standard 0 guage speaker wire or is that to brittle for the heat of your engine bay?
If its another kind of wire what kind & where abouts can I purchase some?? IE: GTA area

get some welding cable from from a welding supply store and $4 worth of loom....

^^X2...welding cable is about as industrial as you can get easily. If it's good enough for industrial welding and the crap they drag it through, it's good for your car!

call me silly but isn't 4awg good enough for the big 3? they are all short runs under the hood

i was looking under the hood of this car i just bought. and the positive to the alt. is bound with a bunch of other wires for a good length, like 5ft prolly. can i make a new route for the wire instead of useing where they ran the old one? do i have to take the old wire out? i only ask because its going to be very hard to get the wrap off the wires to pull one wire out. or can i just add a wire to the existing factory setup? sorry for thread stealing i just had sum questions..... :)

yes, don't remove the factory wire, just add the extra wire...more wire = less resistance, less voltage drop, more power to your accessories.

welding cable licks balls for under the hood. It tends to have a paper liner underneath the rubber insulation and if water sprays up under the hood it will wick down the paper and cause the entire length of wire to corrode which makes it stiff, all munged up and conduct very poorly. At least this is what happened to my welding wire that was under the hood, I got it from Princess auto

^^learn to install it properly! I still have welding cable from 1989 that's still fully functional, and was installed in 2 different cars for over 12 years in total.

I only added 0 gauge to battery negative to chassis, so thats really only 1 of big 3, but I think this is the major one. My system voltage runs 14.4 - 15 anytime, even when blasting it. The only time it drops is when I turn on the A/C and/or defogger at idle.
