Greetings From Ottawa

Hello Everyone,

Congrats on a great forum, it's great to see a Canadian site like this...Tons of info and Cool pics.

I used to be nuts into car audio a couple years back but due to school priorities, career start-ups/changes and general life issues I got a little side tracked and lost interest in all sorts of aftermarket stuff...

That's all changed in the past couple weeks as a recent purchase re-sparked my interest/obession with the topic...I picked up a 2001 Prelude and I'm just now starting a short list of what my new system will consist of. I already put in an Alpine CDA-5897 HU and love it so far...It even makes the factory speakers sound half decent. I can't wait until I have an amp driving some interiors.

Here is what I got mapped out as a project for the next couple months as I'm in no rush at the moment:

Highs/Mids

JL Audio XR650-CSi 6.5 components up front
JL Audio VR960-CXi 6*9 in the rear
Alpine MRV-F345 4 channel to drive the above

Low End

12 JL W6 or 12 Alpine Type X - Just one. I want to put one higher-end driver as opposed to 2 or more lesser drivers. I also plan on integrating a store bought box into a custom built trunk botton that will allow the box to be bolted down. I also plan to hide the amps somewhere - just not sure where yet. Then imma let a professional do all the wire work...But Im getting ahead of myself.

1 Alpine MRD-M605 Mono Block to push the sub...

I would greatly appreciate any thoughts and/or advice on the proposed set-up as well as suggestions for any accessories such as crossover's, stiffners, wire-spits etc...

Sorry for the long winded post & I look forward to discussion!!!

Cheers,

Welcome back to the mix. Sounds like a hot car that will soon have a hot system.

By the sounds of it you are after a good sounding system rather that one that plays to stupid volume levels and drowns out everything else. List some goals of what you are after in the system, then options can be given.

Welcome indeed. I am going threw something similar to you, I dissapeared from the car audio seene for a few years but after getting my fj cruiser, its sound system is so horrible that I am back.

I am also in Ottawa, well Gatineau.

Your system sounds cool, I would dump the 6 X 9 though and use the money for better component speakers up front or to simply save the money heh.

Thanks dude...I am somewhat conerned anout the 6.5 mounting depth and fit in the door panel. Any insight would be much appreciated. I might just fire off a call to JL when I'm ready to make the buy...Oh yeah I listen to a ton of different music, but mostly punk & metal. That being said, I'm looking for clean accurate sounnd with tight/punchy bass that you can feel in the gut no matter the song. I like some hip-hop and listen to mostly mid 90's hip-hop & underground if anything. That kinda reasons my choice in sub and deck. I think the Alpine deck I picked up is going to be great for my tastes as it offers lots of options for bass configuration...I also want a sub that will bump when turned up:)

I'm definitly not looking to show off...In all honestly the majority of the time i'm the car alone during the commute to and from work. I've always liked very loud & clear music where all notes are represented. I'm leaning toward JL & Alpine just because I've owned products from Alpine in the past and all the JL speakers I've listened to in the past sound really nice...

Also...Can someone chime in on how these products hold up in the winter?? I've had 2 alpine s's that worked great in the cold months...

Smoke_31 10-20-2006 08:48 PM

I don't know specifically about the new jl's, but I ran two old school jl's right through winter for years and they always pounded hard and clean, even in -40 degrees C.

harin101 10-20-2006 08:55 PM

won't the alpine type-x eat that amp and spit it out? i thought that thing needs 1000w+?

JLatsOne 10-20-2006 08:58 PM

Yes, I think so. If I go with Type X, I might purchase the other mono block Alpine offers from that series. Based on the chart on the JL site, this amp should work well with a W6...I'm leaning toward the W6 because it doesn't require as much power...I think. Any thoughts?

blindhammer 10-20-2006 10:05 PM

I cant comment much on the W6, but i do know that those apline type x's are huge power hogs, they will take what ever you want to throw at them (within reason) so for the sake of keeping balance both in the over all qound quality and keeping the price of powering your sub at a reasonable level i would suggest the JL.
