head unit fried by amp?? alpine 9965

i am baffled as to how this can happen

i have an old alpine amp -alpine 3566- that i decided to get rid of. so before i get rid of it, i hooked it up just to make sure it was functioning properly.

next thing i know, 10 seconds in, my head unit -alpine dva 9965- starts to smoke like crazy, and the amp a little as well.

how can this happen?

the deck has no internal amplifier to power speakers. the only thing connected from headunit to amp is the REM and RCA's.

the deck still plays the radio and auxillary fine, it just wont read cd's. could this just be a dirty lens and the deck is still okay?

smoke = burnt components, so your HU's fry

probably fixable

ya i know the components are burnt, and its fixable. but how could that happen? and how could the radio and auxillary still work fine and sound great? thats where im confused.

i just don't see how the amp could do that. any ideas??

Did you use the same power source for both? Your ground were good?

jstoner22 06-23-2009 12:32 PM

ya, i already had my two pdx amps hooked up. all i did was switch over the rcas, ground etc. from my 4.150 to the 3566. obviously my car was off, i had disconnected the power at my block, so nothing was running through.

so yes, the grounds and everything were perfect.

So the prob came from the 3566 first then it could have send some DC thru the RCA or else:dunno:

jstoner22 06-23-2009 12:52 PM

well ya, the problem most definitely came from the 3566. and it must have gone through the rcas.

i have never heard of that happening. but i can't think of what else it could be.

good news!!! just a blown transistor, cost about $50.....a hell of a lot cheaper than a new 9965.

still don't know what caused it though.....

lpchouinard 06-28-2009 10:12 PM

good news indeed! 50 just for the part?

jstoner22 06-29-2009 08:38 AM

nah, 50 total for it to get looked at, part and labor etc.

its a pretty rare amp too, so im sending the 3566 in as well to see whats up, hopefully that is cheap too.
