PS the Excelon has 5V @ 100ohms -- very good voltage AND a 24 bit Wolfson DAC (if it is good enough for a $1500 Arcam home CD player, it should be good enough for your car stereo).

alright, 1 for kenwood. yesterday i read a post about an another forum about some issuses with eclipse decks with that boot up process you have to do. kinda scared me a bit.

as far as the naks go, they are a little to plain for my taste and expensive. but what if you throw pioneer in this debate. i found a pioneer premier deh-p680mp on woofersetc for $199, and a 7800mp for around 300 bucks. i have a pioneer deck i gave to my mom a couple of years back (can`t remember the model #) and i really liked it. any thoughts on pioneer?

all those brands are very good, and I have never had any problems with any of them except Sony in the last 10 years(3 defective Sony decks within a year). My preference has always been Alpine, followed by Pioneer, Clarion, and the rest. Eclipse have always had good performance, but I don't like the way they look, neither the new Kenwoods, Clarions, and most of the other brands. Nakamichi are nice and simple, but lack features and are too expensive for what you get. Honestly, any modern cd player will offer excellent sonic performance...reliability, that's another issue.

There are zero boot up issues with any eclipse and there never has been. Matter of fact there is no such thing as a "boot up" procedure for any Eclipse cd player. Mike is right though, junkies steal anything. That is why I carry Eclipse, replaced free by Eclipse in the first year if it is stolen and backed up with a 3 year warranty. In 11 years of selling the line I have had 6 theft replacements from Eclipse and one ICBC theft replacement. For stolen detach face units, at least 50 ICBC claims a year. At the end of the day though, anything can get stolen and you should always have insurance and a car alarm.

What the person may have been referring to was the simple optional to you locking of the cd player if it is stolen. You tell the cd player that you want to "code" it with a "key cd". The cd player reads the table of contents and burns it into memory then spits out that cd. Make it a cd that you will not listen to, not leave in the car yet will remember what it is. Make it a store bought cd. If the cd player has it's main power line interrupted to it for whatever reason (theft for example), you have 5 tries to insert that "key cd" to get the unit to unlock and then use it. Wrong cd 5 times and the unit is locked and in you come to a Eclipse dealer to have it unlocked. The system works, it works perfectly and there is no getting around it. If you choose to use it, if it is stolen, at least the buttcrack that stole it will never be able to use it either and the next time they see Eclipse, they generally steer clear of it.

Mike would of course pick Kenwood as they don't sell Eclipse either. I on the other hand would go out and buy a Kenwood and prove the customer that the Eclipse does offer far better value. (matter of fact that has already been done before).

I guess each to there own. I know people sporting 10-15 Nak and Eclipse hu's. You also forgot to mention Kenwoods notorious failing faceplates and ribbon cables. I believe that its all personal experience what makes us cast judgement. And the Blau's have been more then realiable to my customers. Still dont care what people say hands down Eclipse and Nak sound much better then a Kenwood or Alpine IMO. Go audition some for yourself.

I don't agree with this at all. Sure there's been people with bad Eclipse decks but it's like that with all companies and I don't feel Eclipse is in any way a huge percentage of the failure market above the other mainstreams.

Mayhem - take a look through the manufacturer's offerings and find the decks that have the features you are looking for. Then go and play with a few and find which one's have the esthetics you prefer.

As for my recommendation: If I was in the market for a new deck the Pioneer 880PRS would be high on my list. Excellent processing abilities in a nice classy appearance all at a very low price.

^^^ After our last round about this deck, I went and ordered one in just so that I could mess around with it. It is also a nice cd player.
