help! amb sub question
 

kay, ive been running my
system for about a year now
and everything is good
but i was just putting my subs into
a new box the other day
rewiring everything
and i realized my subs are 6 ohm (i think)
and my amp is rated for 2ohm (1000watts) and 4 ohm (500watts)
but it still works great?
when i rewire it all, how should i wire it now?

subs= audiobahn sound q 10" dual coil (2 of them)
amp= alpine mdr 1001

any help would be greatly appreciated, o, and heres a before
picture, ill be posting the new pics when im done installing

So your subs are dual voice coil.
Do you know what the resistance of each coil is??
Either way, you are going to want to get your resistance as close to 2 ohms as possible without going below.

well i had them wired series/parallel
which is a 4 ohm resisitance right? i think
(its the first system i've ever built, im still sketchy)
they are dual coil, but im not sure wut their load is
audiobahns site says they are either 3 or 6
but i dunno, thats for this years subs to
not last years, i also dunno if i should wire
them for a 2 ohm or 4 ohm load,
2 is louder but 4 is better quality right?

well if they're 6 ohm coils, then you can have either 3 ohm(parallel) or 12 ohm(series). If you have two subs, then you get either 1.5 ohms, or 6 ohms(parallel) or 6 ohms, 24 ohms(series). If you want to play it safe, use a 6ohm configuration. You will get less than the 4ohm rated output of your amp( somewhere around 350-375 watts total @ 6ohms. I would try it at 1.5 ohms and keep an eye on the amp. If it gets very hot, don't do it, if it's o.k. then let it ride. Those amps usually have protection circuit that will turn on if it's an unacceptable load anyway. As far as SQ goes, I run my subs at 1 ohm and it's clean, tight, and very satifying. I've tried the same combination at 2 ohms and 4 ohms, and I've been unable to detect any audible difference with similar power.

What do you mean "you think"? Did you measure them? What did you measure?
Most car subs are 4 ohm, or dual 4 ohm, or dual 2 ohm. I have never seen a 6 ohm sub.
Most 4 ohm subs are less than 4 ohms resistance, maybe even between 3 and 3.5 ohms. Chances are that you measured 2 4ohm subs in series, or another combination of dual voice coil connection. But not a 6 ohm sub.

actually JBL GTI subs are dual 6ohm, and so are those Audiobahn sound q subs, but yes, it's definitely a rare thing.
