Help finding H.U ~ 4V, 2 Pre-out, W/ USB

I'm currently scouring the Internet to find head-units that have at least a pair of 4V pre-outs, and front USB connectivity for use with a Thumb drive.

I want to compile a list of the all the decks that match this criteria, then compare them by price, warranty, and aesthetics, et cetera.

Sony CDX-GT620U This one is close, but only has 2V pre-outs.

Kenwood Excelon KDC-X492

Maybe I've found what I'm looking for... I've had some issues with Kenwood in the past - Head-unit stopped reading CD's. Fixed once under warranty, crashed again 6 days after being re-installed. But that was a while ago.

Anybody have more recent experiences, good or bad, with the Excelon line?

Thanks guys.

I have had zero issues with the current Excelon head units. Eclipse CD1200 also is going to be a close fit for you. Front panel AUX and USB inputs, Ipod ready by adding a cable, 2 x 3volt preouts.

I run a kenwood deck, have for 2 years, had a couple probs with flip face couple months ago, but been a solid deck... wish i would not been a cheap ass and gotin an excelon though

Mr2NR, how much do you sell the Kenwood deck for?
We don't own an Ipod. And she has never expressed any interest in one. When the guy who was helping us out at a local audio shop was using a 512MB thumb drive, she was really impressed. The problems with the Sony decks like the one he was using, were that the USB model has 2V pre-outs, where the IPod only model has 4V.
With a 4 or 8Gig USB memory stick she'd be able to store uncompressed .wav files on it for songs where she doesn't want to forfeit quality for quantity. Or she could put 500-1000 MP3's. Or she could split the difference.

clarion, JVC, panasonic, pioneer i use an 8gig thumb drive for mp3's and i still dont even have 1/4 filled lmao

I have that deck, it works great. It reads everything I throw into it and barely skips. Best part is it was under $200 :D when I bought it

I have a price on the Kenwood at $198 before taxes from Radioactive in Burlington. Waiting to hear back from EHR, to see what they sell the unit for.

The Pioneers are all 2V preouts.

There's only one Panasonic front USB head-unit, and its a 2V pre-out unit as well. Has 1 year warranty...

JVC seems to have 2.5V preouts, and 1 year warranty as well.

Think I'm going to stick with that Excelon for $230 after tax...

you could always get an alpine or pioneer

TragicMagic 11-19-2008 11:16 AM

Alpine Head Units I don't see any that have a front USB slot... If they did, I'd definitely consider one.

i have the same Kenwood deck.. i think they could have done something better with the multi function audio selection/track/volume control knob. its the main control for everything and kinda gets irritating when your driving and trying to turn it up or down and you happen to bump it and you change track :( other than that its a great deck and not a problem at all if you use the remote (recommended anyways, lol). i would recomend it.

personally i think the front usb looks sloppy and fragile. I like the rear usb that my kenwood x891 has, easily hidden and still accessable in my ashtray since i dont smoke, and it keeps the front looking clean and sleek.

TragicMagic 11-19-2008 01:12 PM

That's a good point. I've heard other people mention the same issue with front USB slots. I could step up to the KDCx592 which the rear USB. The only other difference appears to be cosmetic, and the display.

danyman 11-19-2008 02:34 PM

y front??? use a rear and shove it in the glove box. less of a chance to break the thumb drive. i broke 2 allready

danyman 11-19-2008 02:44 PM

whats the point of the copy ( carforall.net )???

MR2NR 11-19-2008 03:31 PM

^^^^ he was a spammer dude.

I sent you a PM for the price of the 492 as asked. Thanks for the opportunity to earn your business.

danyman 11-19-2008 06:53 PM

ahh now i know lol thks

Okay,
So we ended up getting the KDCx592. Here's the story...

Went to EHR today. Was told that the price had been "recently reduced" to $249, from $279. That the necessary wiring harness and hardware kit were $35 and $25, respectively. After tax that was going to run us $350 and change, not including any installation. I had already sent an email to one of their salesmen, via their email address, and was quoted $225 for that same unit.

Feeling like I was getting the "shaft", we left. My fiancee, being the more "ballzy" decided she wanted to go back in and renegotiate. She came out with a price of $219 for the 592.
While in the parking lot we called FM Audio here in Brantford, to find out what they sold the harness and kit for... the guy we spoke to asked what we were getting the deck for, and told me that the hardware (both) would total $40.
Long story short, we're getting the deck for $219, plus $40 hardware, from FM Audio. They also have a free install on head-units right now, as it turned out. He said that we would probably be charged a shop fee for the wiring connections that are going to be used, about $10.

So $305 after tax, including install. Instead of $350 after tax, without install.

I haven't been happy with FM Audio in the past, as you may have seen me state once or twice. But it appears that have new guys running the car audio department, so who knows, we might have better luck this time around.
