help finding the right amplifier
 

i have two massive cw 10's and i'm in search of the right amplifier for them. i've looked around the web at a couple different brands such as the alpine mrp-m850 mono class d and the Kenwood kac-9103 class d mono amp. My main concern is that i already have a small amp powering some coaxials and i dont want to have to do the " big 3 " to make everything work . I dont know if it helps or not but im doing all this to a 2003 sentra. The subs could handle upwards of around 1200 watts rms but im not big on spl numbers i just want them to give me huge amounts of clean quality bass. I've got about $500 cnd to spend on this amplifier.

Having sufficient power to drive your speakers isn't all about big SPL numbers; It also has to do with making the driver perform the way it was designed to perform. I would look for an amplifier that can provide close or more than the rated power of your drivers.

There's plenty of options in your price range for quality pieces. Lots of great used options also if you really want to save some cash.
One amp that would work very well is the Orion 1200D (very efficient, small in physical size, and good for ~1300-1400rms@1ohm) and is in the Classifieds on this forum:

Doing the Big 3 upgrade takes nothing more than a little elbow grease and a couple bits of large guage wire with connectors. It will maximize the efficiency of your electrical system.

Don't hesitate to do the Big 3. It doesn't cost a lot and your car will be healthier for it. The alternator could be compared to a heart that pumps blood (power) through the veins (wires) of the car. If you increase the size of the veins the blood will flow more easily.

could i get a more detailed description of how much a big 3 upgrade would cost because it seems clear to me now that its worth doing, only problem is that the budget is kinda tight seeing as how im still just a kid in high school. Also the orion amp looks decent any other suggestions, i just want to make sure i get this right the first time.

As for recommending that amp to the original poster it is a horrible idea to use that amp on what I'm guessing is a factory electrical system as that thing will draw huge amperage.

The three parts of the "Big 3" are

• Battery negative to chassis
• Chassis to engine block
• Alternator positive to battery positive

You might as well go with 1/0 gauge wire. Knukoncepts sells some nice wire for a decent price and they're pretty accommodating to Canadian customers. There is also Smartass.bz (forum sponsor) that sells Bassworx wire.

Depending on how you route the wires, you could probably get away with 6 or 7 feet. If you want to hide them you should get a few extra feet. An easy way to find out how much you'll need is to take an extension cord out to your car and use that to see how much you'll need then stretch it out so that you can measure the straight length. It's easier than trying to pull a tape measure around corners and stuff.

back the the amp question, anyone have any expirence with a clarion dpx11500 , looks like it would give me what i want.

Wow that blows me away! Are we in search of a better performance amp here or just talking fancy? I guess someone doesn't really appreciate or understand old school amps. Orion is also good but you wanted to come up with 1200 watts out of a mosfet design amp and expect less current draw? "current = square root of power over resistance" would be wrong then. Well I'd rather give this amp for free to someone whom a little bit more appreciative.
