I have this and like it

also any aftermarket speakers from future shop from a good company will work way better then the stock ones you have, one tip is to use the existing wire when you go to hook them up, saves so much work

bahahahaha, a buddy has a '91 Topaz (errr Ho-paz) with some stuff in it. The fronts are 5 1/4 speakers, and the rear are 5x7/6x8? Not quite sure on the rear sizes as my buddies car didn't come with speakers and he jerry rigged 6x9's in there.

Oh yeah, there's also a Type-R 12" bumping in the trunk

My first car was an 88 Tempo. I put a Pioneer headunit powering Boston Accoustics 5 1/4" in the front and 6x9's in the back.
It was pretty good for an inexpensive start into car audio.

hey man you want a cheap deck, for $200 there is a extreme sound MP3 cd deck at walmart it's 45 watts x 4 and it sounds great. But the only bad thing it only has one pre-amp output.

I would stick with some brand name gear. You don't have to shell out to have the latest and greatest. Pioneer has some good lower end MP3 decks that wont cost a whole lot. So will other companies like panasonic, jvc etc. Stick with brands that have been in the car audio business for a while. Alpine makes a really solid deck, but might be a little expensive for what you are looking for. As for speakers, some afermarket coaxial speakers will work wonders. But, again, stick with name brand equipment.

If you plan on selling your car, the deck should be easily movable from one to the other, so don't skip out on a good deck for that reason. Same goes for 5 1/4" speakers, many cars can use this size.

Pioneer is a great solid company. Very good band for the buck!

As for the fronts and rears, I would say the opposite of what was posted above.

Spend MORE money on the front for 2 reasons:

(1) The front sound stage is what your ears will hear more clearly. There is a direct line from the speaker to your ears while the rear-fill has to bounce the sound to your ears. - give your ears the better sound, not your passengers in the back.

(2) If the fronts are 5 1/4 thosre speakers are VERY transferable from car to car (you can mount them in holes for 5 1/4, 6 1/2, 6x9, & 5x7 with a simple mounting plate) 6x9s are not as universal.

I would say $250 - $300 on the deck, and spend whatever you want on front speakers. Don't buy rear speakers, just leave the factory speakers in there and place a resistor (and possibly a cap) in the line to keep them quieter so their poor sound quality doens't reach your ears, but your back passengers still get music.
