Help with system setup

I hope this doesn't fall under the "what's the best..." category of topics. Here's my problem:
my girlfriend's got a 2000 Corolla with blown front and crackly rear speakers. I want to buy her a new system for Christmas. I've been an HT enthusiast/audiophile for a while now, but know absolutely nothing about car audio, so I'm hoping someone can help me.

I checked on Crutchfield that the fronts are standard 6 1/2", but the rears are 6 3/4" enclosures. I haven't seen too many 6 3/4" speakers on the net, so I'm wondering if 6 1/2" speakers will fit?

Also, should I just replace the fronts with good quality speakers and leave the rears the way they are, or replace them both? Or go with a fronts/sub system. I have a Pioneer DEH-P3900MP deck in the car right now. Any recommendations fro 6 1/2" speakers? I have about $400 to spend.

Thanks for any help.

Depends what you want out of the system. You could probably find a set of $149-179ish coaxials for the front and a 200ish sub package and keep to your budget (not including install)

If you want 'all around sound' just add a pair of $50 rear speakers to the above. And yes 6.5" will generally fit the 6.75" spec.

Thanks for the replies. I ordered 4 Kickers from Crutchfield, they got good reviews and were not expensive. Should I order an amp with it? I have a new-ish Pioneer deck, and I don't know if it will have enough power to supply the new speakers.

Thumbs up

In a word.....yes.....

As a general rule of thumb, somewhere around 4 X 50watts for a cleaner sound than deck power.....

If you plan on adding a sub, more is good.....

A quality amp with that rating will do 2 X 50 for the fronts and 1 X 200 for a 4 ohm sub setup. At that level your deck will have enough juice to give you some rear fill if you want. More power than that and you will have to look at amplifying the rears as well.

It may be enough for your GF.....or not.....

If she listens to it for a month and decides she needs an upgrade.....you may have created a monster.....

Haha she's a monster already... in that she's used to listening to an $8000 home theater. An amp it is, then. Any recommendations? What sort of price point am I looking at for a quality amp that does 4x50W? I got another $200 or so to work with, I hope that's enough.

That budget will be a little low for a new, quality amp. If you look around thru the "For Sale" section here you should be able to find something that will work for you. Brands to look for would include, but are not limited to, Kicker, RF, MTX, Alpine, Clarion, Kenwood and others.

For example, this amp is a good example of what you could be looking at. It has a bit more power, but that is a good thing....
