hmm bro's system (i told him to buy) sounds better than mine (or louder anyways)

So...last year I conned my bro into buyin a 12" Brahma from genuine car audio i believe it was, along with a hifonicx bd1500 or whatever the model was on their 1500w amps that were a solid deal. He's got it in a fairly small sealed box (can't be that much over a foot and a half maybe 2 feet total.

That sucker pounds!!! (I know he's got an amp for his fronts (coaxials i gave him), but i'm not sure what it is. Overall though, his bass is a fair amount louder than mine, granted he's got a lil more power (those amps were supposedly over rated). I'm running my 12" XXX in a rather large ported box of a viper D1200.1 built by hofulstrof (spelling)

I don't know a ton about car audio, but the setup's I recommend often turn out better than my own, and half the time mine cost's more DOH.

Brahma's are totaly kick ass subs man thats probilly why i think the brahma's are quite a bit better then the XX but some other people might think differently if u bought abit bigger better quility amp though you would be louder then him then im guessing

What you perceieve as "louder" may not be nearly as loud. dB wise, im sure your setup is higher.

His seems louder because sealed boxes hit lower notes alot better than sealed. Lower notes seem louder due to being much more violent.

But, until both are metered, its hard to tell.

Just my 2 cents.

i think trevor meant sealed boxes hit lower frequencies better than a sealed so it may sound louder.

Think they both meant a sealed box hits lows better than ported ;)

wrong ^^^ not always.

In 99% of the cases a sealed box sub can play a lower note than a ported box. This is because the port is set to a tuned frequency and the response is rapidly rolled off below that tuning frequency whereas the sealed box is still for the most part has a nice slow gradual roll of by comparison. The port can add a substantial amount of output at and above the tuning frequency which is the general case but below the tuning frequency, nada, which at the same time is why it is recommended to use a subsonic filter so as to remove any unwanted information that will damage the sub.

What kind of vehicle is your brother driving as compared to you? This will also have a great affect on the output of the subwoofer system.

ok...in a pre-drunk state....i was in the back of his ride to find out, the box is in fact ported (my bad), slot port near teh top. Box is probably 2ft tall and maybe 1.5ft deep; a prefab box....ohh what was the name i read....bassworx..thats it.

I believe this is the box here althoguh his looked to be a lil taller (more room between the sub n the port):
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...10063868&catid=

Overall, his sub was a HECK of a lot more punchy, which mine seems to lack. I suppose mine is great for the super low bass lines, but i don't get much in the way of bass drum on many songs.

Must just be a different box thats needed....i'll find exact specs when i return from holidays

**edit**

I forgot to mention, he's got a 95 Bronco, box stands upright and takes up a kinda lil corner in the back...and my vehicle is a 94 grand cherokee, where mine takes up the whole width of the vehicle leaving only a foot or so of room between the tailgate/hatch and the box (just enoguh for golf clubs)

here's my box: 3.5cu ft @ 30hz w/ 37sq" of port (after all displacement)
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...37_46_full.jpg

his box equates out to like 2.25ft before port or sub displacement.

Now clearly i don't know enough about box building and this jazz to understand why his seeminly sounds better, but what could you guys recommend for the next box to make it more punchy with possibly a wider range of notes...catching more of the bass drum stuff instead of maybe only the crazy bass lines in most rap songs?
