Hookin' up speaker wire
 

Speaker wire has a plain insulation wire and a striped insulation wire. Which do you use for positive and which for negative? Just wondering what the majority of people do!

If its a red stripe=pos,any other color i use for neg so i guess im stuck in the middle lol.

Pos for me... basically any special marking always goes on the positive for me.

If you look at most decks,,, the speaker wires coming from it, the ones with the stripes (usually black stripe on colored wire) is the negative.

If the wire is clear and one has a red stripe, I'll use that for positive.

If the wire has no stripe, one is usually round, and the other squareish,,
I'll use the sqareish one for negative.

But, to answer your question, if the wires are the same, and one has a black stripe or tracer, I'll use that for negative.

I generally use the one that has the 'extra feature' as positive... as long as you are consistant life is good, as soon as you goof up once then the entertainment starts

lol, crazy. Anyone I have worked with, the striped or marked wire is always negative unless it is marked ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ This is pretty consistent with manufacturers with the exception being black wires marked with white or red tracers - often those are the positive leads.

But, as mentioned, the important thing is to be consistent.



NOW, one wire is SILVER and the other GOLD. What's the positive? :ohwell:

I try to make the positive the obvious one , ie red stripe/red wire,basically anything with red=positive any other color stripe/wireis neg.
The best way i have found with different wires is the diff between the actual wire inside the insulation gold/silver.
if wire manufacturers stuck to this rule there wouldnt even be a thread about this lol.
I even have some monster cable speaker wire that the only thing different between the two strands in the words "monster cable" written in black,i use that for neg btw.
I can see the need for industry standards between installers and such,but if you do youre own installs and stick to youre own rules,as they may be you will be ok,but lol if you cant remember what you did when youre hooking up a new set of speakers/amp etc,leave it to the pros or install while sober :smilie_da
